Re: T-Top trim removal?

sorry for the confusion. on the t-top glass around the 3 glass edges there is a metal trim shaped like a "U" and the edge of the glass sits in it to prevent it from chipping i think. the trim is on the t-top and NOT on the body. i want to take it off because my drivers side top doesnt have it and the passenger side does. dont know how to take it off.

Re: T-Top trim removal?

I think your best bet would be to find a new piece for your other T-top. Just a hunch. Unless you like to get wet?

Re: T-Top trim removal?

no it has nothing to do with the seal cause the one without it doesnt leak. when you take off the t-top it comes with it. its molded on the edge of the glass. think someone coulda put it on there?

Re: T-Top trim removal?

I'd find more of the trim to protect the glass from being chipped on the edge and possibly getting shattered.

Re: T-Top trim removal?

i have an 83z parts car , thats the kind of t tops it has . i think the early ones had the metal trim and hooks to secure instead of sliding rod to secure . i think if you tried to remove it you might be asking for a leak . good luck .

Re: T-Top trim removal?

I have the same style on my 83. The channel is plastic and is no longer available from GM. I have look and look and can not find any sources, I’d like to replace mine also. Its held on with weather strip adhesive, it is possible to pull it off but will most likely tear. I have tried to get it off many parts cars with little success.

Re: T-Top trim removal?

My 87 doesn't have that trim piece. The edge of tempered glass is sensitive and will shatter easily if hit just right. The trim was probably to protect against that. The newer ttops might have some edge protection built into the glass that helps prevent shatter when hit. Tempered glass is strong because it has an internal pressure pushing out, while the outside is pressing in. The edges of the glass cooled more quickly allowing for less temper. Hitting the edge just right will shatter the glass, where an equal blow to the center may not do a thing.

sounds like someone replaced one of the tops on your car with the wrong style.
Like scottmoyer prev. said, his 87 doesn't have that glass edge trim,so your 89 shouldn't either.
Can you post any pics of it?Scott could probably tell ya in a heartbeat if its the right piece and if its not, be able to tell ya what it came from.
Check his car out! That thing is GORGEOUS!
I have seen it in person.

Re: T-Top trim removal?

I just bought a 92 v6 t-top and it has metal black painted trim running along the edges of the top also. But the top is plastic and not glass....... I recently saw a glass top without the trim. So I personally was assuming that the glass ones did not come with the trim at all. But that was just me thinking out loud

Re: T-Top trim removal?

OK guys i think i figured it out. 82 to 85 camaros had the trim. newer models (86-92) did not. i also found out that the glass (other than the tint) SHOULD be the same through all the years. Since my trim is so cracked anyways i am going to try to remove it and then clean the glass. it should remove fairly easily since its loose anyways. Like Scott Moyer said that the edges could be very easily shattered ill have to be very careful when i remove them. Ill tell ya how they turn out!
