rear hatch not latching

Hi everyone

I just got home from picking up my new 89 Formula 350 Firebird. I'm pretty excited, even though it needs some work.

Anyway, I opened up the rear hatch to see what was in the trunk, and now it doesn't want to latch shut again. I ended up having to tie it down for the night and I will mess with it again tomorrow. I checked, and nothing appears to be in the way of the mechanism. It just seems as if the latch isn't reaching the mechanism, which is really weird. Nothing is blocking it.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: rear hatch not latching

I constantly battle with my latch on my 83 t/a... I have to remove the plastic from the inside..work the mechanism a few times to find the malfunctioning part... then apply a light film of grease to the mechanism...holds up for a couple months...I belive the malfunction is due to the return spring not being as strong as it was 10 years ago when I replaced it... however I am about to embark on a mission to change mine over to a power release system and shave the key hole for a smooth look...If you find out anything else... let me know.. might save me a headache in the future... lol.. Thanks...

Re: rear hatch not latching

The trick with mine is, if I push the button inside the car to open it, it wont latch again, but if I open the hatch with the key when i close it again it latches fine try that see if it works

Re: rear hatch not latching

Ok thanks guys!!

I got it all figured out. I think there was something blocking the hatch or something. But anyway, it works now, so it's all good! Thanks

Re: rear hatch not latching

You didn't say if it was a manual closer or the electric slider.

Re: rear hatch not latching

It is an electric hatch.

It's all fixed now though

Re: rear hatch not latching

Basically I just unhooked the battery and then hooked it up again, and made sure nothing was blocking the hatch, and it worked. I don't know why, but it did
