Temporary paint for storage

Ok guys, not the best situation. My project car is down to bare metal on the quarterpanels, most of the rust is off. I was intending to do the repairs i needed and then get a real paint job. Well, life just turned upside down and I cannot spend much more time or money on it for a while. I'm going to have to move, and I have somewhere to store it, but not to work on it.

I'm not eager to get rid of her. I couldn't get the money that I wanted out of it, and I've put too much blood and sweat into that car to give up on it now.

So:

I need to cheaply get something on that metal so it doesn't rust. I don't care how it looks neccisairly, it just needs to preserve the metal. I can always take the paint off next year when I hopefully can get back to it. I'm hitting it with self etching primer. Will just rattle can paint be ok to put over that? Is there something better I can do to preserve it? Remember I'm on a serious budget and running out of time. Thanks

the primer itself would be adequate enough. you are preventing the moisture from getting to the metal. thats all that counts.

Sorry, I forgot to specify that storage will not be indoor. It will likely be stored outside, subject to rain and snow and stuff which is why i asked about more than primer.

I'd go with an epoxy prime. That will keep the water out and should give you a nice base to go off of. I just primed most of my truck with PPG epoxy prime, it's nice, but pretty expensive. I guess you could look through the spray paints and see if you can find one that keeps water out

i would definatly recomend primer and a regular tarp. primer is porous but winter is pretty dry. a tarp tied down will keep the snow and rain off the primer and you shouldnt have to worry about moisture in the air too much. if anything you will end up with minor surface rust. and to keep critters out, pack you engine bay and intereior with dryer sheets.

Re: Temporary paint for storage

definitely hit it with epoxy primer or spray paint like rustolium black to seal from water.
I would also recommend to get actual breathing water proof cover as regular tarp will trap water between it and the car

would say primer should work fine, but i would suggest a tarp and or car cover for it, if possible, walmart sells them for around $63
