Largest tire for OEM Rims??

My friend is wondering what is the largest tire you can put on the OEM rims for his camaro, his dad has 295-50-R15 on his and he dont think they will work. He has a 1988 Camaro RS with the V8 TBI. Thanks

Re: Largest tire for OEM Rims??

295s barely fit on an 8" wide rim, they will never fit a 7" wide rim.

Re: Largest tire for OEM Rims??

He was hoping for getting something like 265 or 275's to fit would they?

Re: Largest tire for OEM Rims??

Nope, the 295s fit on the 15x8 wheel because of the sidewall height (and they look like balooons), the larger your rim, the lower your sidewall and the less excessive width (or too narrow) is tolerated. My guess would be 255 would be the max. For 265 you'd need an 8"rim, probably even 8.5 (minimum approved rim width). Check with tire manuf. Their spec sheets should list approved rim widths.

I've had 275/50/15's on the stock wheels, and actually still do. A set of 275/60/15 should also work just fine, but definitely no more than 275 for those 7" wide wheels.

Exactly, 235-60-15 is the largest tire you can get on a stock 15x7" wheel and still be considered "safe".

A true 295 tire needs about 9.5" to work right.
