A-pillar rust repair
I have an 87 camaro and shes a real beauty. Only problem is the rust on my A-pillars is getting obnoxious. Does anyone have a walk through on how to repair these pillars? I have a welder if necessary and I have to do something cause I refuse to drive around with duct tape on there any longer and I am not paying a body shops ridiculous prices. Thanks in advance
Re: A-pillar rust repair
Your talking about the pillars that run along the windshield right? Mine had rust in the upper corners on both sides. Basically I found out how much was rusted and cut it out with a dremel. Then I got some 22ga steel and cut it to size and mig welded it in. The of course ground it down and body filled. I'ts not that bad if you can weld, just make sure you get all the rust. So tap on the metal to make sure your cutting it all out.

Post up a pic of yours, lets see how bad it really is. So I can basically dremel out the affected areas and weld in a new piece of steel? How will I know if I have absolutley ALL of the rust, so it will not come back???

Re: A-pillar rust repair
Hey dustin, just saw your pics in your thread. Looks like you got your work cut out for you. That looks like a pretty big job, I hope mine isnt that bad but I guess I wont know till I start investigating.
Re: A-pillar rust repair
Well from what I seen you can realy see in the pillar so you'd just have to tap on it with a body hammer or something. If it's rusted out the metal will be really soft and/or sound diff when tapping. Yeah I don't know how bad yours is but you can fix just about anything with a welder. Heck i'm running into the problem with the lip for the t-tops mine are rotted so gonna have to cut it all out and make a new lip. And I just learned body work a couple months ago, and learned how to weld a few weeks ago. So if I can do it with that little experience I think you can.

Re: A-pillar rust repair
Cut and weld yes? The only reason im nervous is because its a small area to work with, right near the windshield and not alot of room for mistakes. My dad has welding experience (did floorboards on his camaro and other odd jobs) so he should be able to help me out. Could you guys tell me a little more if I post pics of my pillars?
