Finally picked up an 87 carbed car

I wanted a carburated third gen, preferably an Iroc because i had owned 3 of them previously. I finally found something i could deal with, plus for $200 running and driving i couldn't really go too wrong. It had been sitting by a garage for 5 years and the owner finally parted with it. A guy i know bought it put a fuel pump in it and drove it about 500 miles before i picked it up.

All i know is it's an LT with some crazy after market ground effects, carbed 305, t tops, and it is factory yellow which i think is the last year for that. I'm gonna put my 383 and 400 turbo in it sometime this summer. I bought doors, fenders, front bumper and ground effect, rear bumper, and a Harwood lift off hood today for a little under $600. The parts are perfect since they came off of a car that was completely restored then never hit the road due to lack of time.

Giant cheater slicks on the rear mean no traction whatsoever so that's where it will sit until i have time to winch it a bit farther.

I've never been a yellow fan but unless someone comes up with something else it will be yellow. Do you think i should try to sell the ground effects and bumper covers? I'm definitely getting rid of the wheels and tires but i don't want to trash the ground effects if someone might be interested in them.

Not a bad buy! How's the undercarriage? I'm liking the tails but not liking bumpers. Personally, I would hold onto it for a little while and see if anyone likes them. Where you guys from any how?

PS. Welcome to TGO!

Re: Finally picked up an 87 carbed car

I'm in Northeast Ohio. The undercarriage is nice, it was stored on concrete so all the rust is where water pools and i already took care of those parts today by buying replacements. The bottoms of the doors and the bottom rear of the front fenders are shot but no big deal to replace. The bumpers kind of grew on me but they're arent my style. I'm aiming more for this.

I've fixed much worse so i'm not worried about the work. The black headlight buckets mess me up also but i'm only the second owner so it might have been done by the dealership where it was originally purchased because she said it is the same as when she bought it. Only thing she did was put the wheels on it. My ****** isn't really bitchin' enough to drive this thing the way it is.

I'm quite happy with it because i'm doing it as a summer/dragstrip toy. It's not going to be a flawless showcar but it will be a nice driver for those sunny days. I own too many cars as is so i really wanted something to play with.

I could be wrong too, but I thought all of them had black headlight buckets, at least after a certain year, may have been all third gens though.

Anyway, dosen't look to bad. I would have done it for 200. Sounds like you have a plan.
For paint, I don't really like yellow either. Red generally any shade looks good, light metalic blue, black, dark purple, with silver stipes.

i remember reading somewhere that gm gave the z28 and the z28 only black headlight buckets to make them easily identifiable to the public. may not be true but but i did read it somewhere maybe it was on tgo. and +1 on ditchin the yellow

Re: Finally picked up an 87 carbed car

Finally warmed up and i got a couple days off so i made some progress. I was happy just to have my wheels on it but i got more than that done.

I need to finish bolting the fenders on, lower airdam, and mount my hood. Then i can replace the rear bumper and get it painted. The antenna hole is shaved so for now i have my antenna inside the fender. I mostly use my Zune for music anyway so reception isn'a a big deal.

Re: Finally picked up an 87 carbed car

The graphic is really well done, airbrushed, but it's not my style either. The hood also has graphics on it but no big deal to sand them down. The car i got my parts from was local and had never seen the road after it was restored. I got everything i needed from one car and it was all like brand new, very cheap also. I only have about $500 in all my parts including my lift off 4" Harwood cowl hood.

The doors need everything but the rods and linkages put in but that's not a problem. I'm just swapping my stuff into them. I drove it down the road the way it sits and it wasn't too bad.

Re: Finally picked up an 87 carbed car

I'm curious, why did you specifically want a carbed car? It wouldn't seem to make much of a difference to me if you're just gonna swap in a different engine anyway..

The rear hatch pull down did work but i removed it and gave it to a friend who needed one. I need to go get a regular latch when i have time. I didn't want it and he needed it so it worked out well.

Paint wise mine will end up the same scheme as yours only yellow and black if i go two tone. It is staying yellow though.

I wanted the carbed motor for the mechanical fuel pump which means i don't have to put a fuel pressure regulator on when i swap motors to another carbed motor. It also means a heck of a lot less wiring to get rid of later.

Re: Finally picked up an 87 carbed car

I'm hoping to get some more done Monday, supposed to be off but that's always an iffy situation. I'm going to get the rear bumper changed, hopefully the side skirts, and the front airdam. If i get that stuff done i will be driving it to work at least once by the end of the week. I'm dying to drive it more than a couple hundred yards.
