Cowl hood question

I just installed a bolt on 3" hood on my camaro. Can I use the stock hood shocks with it? Do they make a lower tension shock that I need to go with? I really don't want to not use anything, unless it's just not advised. Thanks in advance.

Re: Cowl hood question

You are fine using stock ones. I have been using stock ones on my 3" Cervini hood for about 3 years now.

Re: Cowl hood question

they do make the shocks for the factory fiberglass hoods that came on the early camaros, probably not a bad idea.

I think that old shocks will be ok, but new ones, made for a steel hood, can be too strong and crack the hood.

Im using the ones for the factory glass hoods and have no issues.

Re: Cowl hood question

The shocks that I have are pretty new and were strong even on the steel hood that was on it. That's kind of why I was asking. I do have a pair of old ones that wouldn't hold up the steel hood. I didn't think of trying those. Makes sense because of the weight difference. Now, the shocks that are made for the early fiberglass hoods, can I get those from an autoparts store? Will they know which ones I'm wanting if I ask for it? Thanks for the advice

Re: Cowl hood question

if you ask for the struts for the 82-84 fiberglass hoods and they tell you they are the same as the rest, try elsewhere.

I got mine off ebay.

Re: Cowl hood question

Thanks bvoet, I'll stop by there this weekend and see what they say. wite86irocz28, sorry I don't remember your name. It did just like he said. The initial fit was short of the nose even with the hinges and hood slid all the way foreward. So I took it back off, slotted the hinges another 1/4" and it fit perfect. Tell him I'm REALLY happy with it. Now, I've just got to save up a little and get it painted. I stopped by one place and they said $300. I'm going to get a couple more estimates. Got any hookups?

I bought it used off my local craigslist for $150. This is where he bought it from though. www.championfiberglassproducts.com It fits REALLY nice. I had to slot the holes in the hinges about a 1/4" more than the stock slots are to allow the hood to move foreward. After that, it fits perfect.
