1982 Trans Am S/E ???

I recently came into an '82 T/A SE. Even minus an engine and trans it was only $300 and the body is in near perfect shape with 60K on the odo. I have a few questions:

1. It has the NASCAR logo on the rear quarter panel and it looks like it used to say "Pace Car" on the door...but the stickers are long gone. What does this mean? I know it's not an '83 becuase I checked the VIN....and it doesn't have the '83 ground effects or look like it ever did. It basicly looks just like the Knight Rider car with the small ground effects infront of the rear tires and the small ones attached to the bottom of the front fenders. It's weird...

2. It has the Pace Car interior, but it's in pretty rough shape. I want to restore it back to factory...what color is the capret/headliner/sail panels called?

3. Am I correct in assuming that an '82 T/A had a carburated 305 with a TH350 automatic in it? My car has the factory A/T shifter...just no tranny.

I'm not new to f-bodies, this one being my 5th. It's just been a long time since I had my last one, so I may stumble a bit trying to get back up and running in the forum. I'm also a GM certified tech, so do think any answer will be over my head. Unfortunatly we dont have "company" access to cars that are this old (relativly speaking).

There was an 82 TA Pacecar it was just the regular 82 Red with black decales on it. I'm not sure if it was an option to buy though and what the interior looked like.

Re: 1982 Trans Am S/E ???

Thanks for the info!

YearOne.com has the door panels I need to restore the Pace Car interior, but I dont know what color the carpet and headliner are supposed to be. The ones I have are so dingy, dirty, and torn that I cant tell what it used to look like.

Re: 1982 Trans Am S/E ???

My 82' has a 305 and a thm-200c (M for metric) auto, i dont think the th-350 was an option on the f-bods.

Are you wanting to restore the drivetrain to original, because if you are I'd be willing to part with my turbo 200

Re: 1982 Trans Am S/E ???

I think it was the charcoal color taht they had back in 82

The 82 only came with the 200c or the Manual tranny, and came with either a LG4 (Carb) or the LU5 (Crossfire)

A rare car if you ask me! Hope it is solid!

Yes, I'd like to get it as close to factory as I can. I'm sure I could use your tranny, but I think shipping it from Indiana to Washington state could be cost prohibitive

What other cars had the same drivetrain? There are a dozen+ pick-n-pulls out here, but none of them have any F-bodies. I was thinking the Caprice or Grand Prix...? Any thoughts?

Okay, I found this...

http://autocollections.com/index.cfm...tails&tab=sold

My car interior is VERY similar to this in color, except I have the PMD seats...

What color are those sail panels??? I looks like some kind of off-white...but the carpet definitely looks charcoal.

I'm not sure, to be honost I don't even recall that color being an option, I thought that light color was only an option for the 83 Daytona edition.

If you manage to find the RPO Codes you could find out what color the interior was.

You could also PM OKC Knight, I think he has the manuel for the color options of the 82 TAs.

I envy you for that car More pics please!!

It's a bad photo, i know. I'll take better ones tonight. The door panel trim is almost white...with light gray inserts....and dark gray carpet.

Dave goes under the name of 3rdgenparts on this board, ask him about the color of the interior. I'm sure he can look it up for you.

I'll do that tonight when I get the RPO codes.

Where did you get that pic of the red T/A??? I was trying to figure out what it says on the door below "Pontaic Trans AM"...I want to see if my car says the same thing.

I'm sure it belongs someplace else. Sorry about the confusion...I guess I had too many questions. If it gets forwarded to the correct forum then I'm saying "Sorry and Thank You" in advance.

That's where I got the Picture from, there is also a Goodyear ad that floats around ebay from time to time where the car is also pictured.

Official Pacecar
Pontiac Trans AM
Daytona 500

Can't read the last part could be the date of the race. Hope this helps.

I was just saying that if a moderator had moved this to History / Restoration, you would've gotten a lot more info about your car.

Check with simo at earlythirdgen.com or on here. He seems to know quite a bit about these cars.

Cool, thanks!

I took some more pics of it last night and I'll put them up later today. I decoded the cowl plate and didn't get much more then I expected, other then the interior is supposed to be "gray"...but it looks like it's been sunbaked and turned white in most places.

Re: 1982 Trans Am S/E ???

If your are still really interested in restoring your T/A to near original I may be of some help.

I'm negotiating with a guy to buy a t56 trans for my car, so I will have no use for my 200c tranny (under 5,000mi on rebuild), or the driveshaft, crossmember, torque arm, flywheel, and almost new starter, my car only has 49,000 miles on it so all of these items are in very good shape.

PM me if this interests you any...

Edit: If your looking in junkyards for one your best bet is almost any late 70's to early 80's GM car with a 305 or smaller, V6 too. I know that on the bottom of my trans, the bottom of the pan, it's embossed "METRIC", its easily visible...but the later 200-4r's might have the same marking, good luck in your quest!! Good to see someone enthusiastic about these early 3rd gens.

New Pictures:

I photoshoped one of the pictures to try and bring the missing lettering out on the drivers door. I can clearly see that it says "Official Pacecar" and the words "Pontiac Trans Am" under it...there are also words below those...but I'm having a harder time making those out...

There should be somethinga fter the 500, I'm assuming it's the date of the race it was used in.

You defenetly have your work cut out for yourself, looks like the previous owners didn't really take care of it. Good luck my friend!
