I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

It was the stock one that was made from beetle dung.

I haven't bought the new fiberglass one, I don't have the funds, but I was tired of looking at the damned thing.

Here are some pictures of the actual spoiler, it's turned upside down.

The other side has chipped paint out the ying yang. More pics next post.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

Here are some pics of the back. I cleaned up around the holes, but it was all gunk and mud and nasty. I think I need to find something to put over them for now so water doesn't get down into the liftgate. Not sure what, though.

And here are the metal braces that hold those little plastic clips that hook the spoiler to the lid. I only had 3 of the 6, I guess the rest broke off. They're soaking in peroxide right now, to get the dirt off. I need to find somewhere to purchase 3 more, because I doubt they come with the spoiler.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

I'm looking at the same situation.
My understanding is that the fiberglass units come with all the necessary
mounting hardware. But check w/ a vendor to confirm. Hopefully, it will
save some effort futzin with that old hardware.

Board member okfaz has used the aftermarket spoilers. Maybe he'll chime
in, or PM him.

good luck,
kk

Yeah. I'm going to try to order the one from Hawk's if it is still there when I have the money.

We shall see.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

Little off topic, I was curious if anyone has taken thier stock wrap around spoiler and fiberglassed a new one from scratch?

I know it can be done by using the old one as a start and making a mold off that.

I've gotten pretty good with fiberglass and have all the tools to tackle a job like this, just curious if anyone else has tried it. There's nothing to these spoliers and has to be a lot cheaper to make than the $500 + shipped you spend for the fiberglass repos.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

We made a mold of a floorpan one time.. (76 Torino) It was a big job, we used 2 x 4's, silicone, and a piece of plywood.

It's a long process, mixing the plaster of paris, and knowing when it's mixed properly (Took my grandfather who made molds to tell us) But you can do it. It would most likely have to be done in 2 pieces though... But you definatly got me thinking.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

When I took off my fiberglass repro one, there were just notches for the metal clips, nothing actually hooking the wing to the clips.

I went and got me an OEM 4th gen wing & put it on. MUCH better looking that the 3rd gen one, IMHO.

And a LOT cheaper! Easy to get one for $100 or less. Last 2 I saw were $100 & $75.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

I sold a nice 4th gen wing modified to fit, I kinda like the look of the original style wing. I just have a hard time spending $500 + for a repro fiberglass

I thought about making my own fiberglass repro for awhile too until I decided on another spoiler; but my approach was going to be a little different. I planned on taking two ~4' x 4' pieces of 2" thick pink foam board and glueing them on top of each other, then simply cutting the spoiler out of the chunk of foam and wrapping it in fiberglass. The stock spoiler has a very simple design and it would be alot easier IMO than making a mold of the original.

Seems like you could wax down the spoiler and squirt some sculpting foam on it to get the shape. Then you could make a mold off that. The spoiler would have to be made as a top/bottom and then fused together.

That's another reason I wanted to do it this way - the two half pieces. I felt it better to have one solid piece versus two halves fused together. That's just me though.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

My 86 has its original unpainted spoiler still. 100% in perfect shape from what I can tell. Garage kept all its life will do that I guess. In any case...Im going to replace it with a fiberglass one...mainly because I basically got one for free

I also want to delete the high mount 3rd brake light on the 86 and go back to the under spoiler light like on the 87+ cars. And I got the necessary parts for that for free at the same time..haha.

My problem is, I have no clue what brand spoiler my fiberglass one is. There is no hardware with it. Actually...I think there were two little metal clips on the ends, but they looked like crap.

I wish there was a way to make the factory window mounts work, because mine are all perfect. Maybe Ill have to get creative. haha.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

For me, there were metal slots on the liftgate. Inside these metal slots were plastic pieces that stuck to the inside of the spoiler, to help attach it. All but 3 of those plastic pieces snapped when I took off the spoiler, and the three I did save got cleaned. I broke another last night when I was looking at it.

Hmm.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

Im in on the group buy for the HAWKS 3rd gen wrap around spoiler thats in the Group Buy section of this forum. The price is $299 for the spoiler plus S&H. We have 5 confirmed buyers as of right now. They won't ship till the 10th person buys; as its structured now. Those of you that want one, get in now, because Ive never seen em this cheap. The whole steel structure was rotted out of mine, I was going to switch over to a flat style pedestal mount spoiler and its trunk lid, but its a pain for me to switch it over AND Im left with the trunk lid and HUGE piece of glass sitting in my garage just waiting to get busted.

I think this reduced price would save a lot of guys some grief. Just call Hawks and tell em you want to be in the thirdgen.org spoiler group buy folder. Then post in the forum when its confirmed so the rest of us know where we stand.
OKFOZ has one of their spoilers on his Formula and I don't think he had a problem with it; maybe he'll write in here
Thanks guys.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

On the mount of the new spoiler, I ve read that any competent body shop can mount some attaching brackets to the spoiler by CAREFULLY drilling holes in it. Not sure where I read that info but its been a couple years.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

Yeah Ive read of people putting screws into the firberglass spoiler, and then the head of the screws slide into the brackets on the glass. I havent looked at mine yet.

I picked mine up while buying other parts from a member. Sort of just threw it in...? But Im hoping to fit it soon before my mint stocker gets screwed up. Hoping someone with a garage queen that is trying to restore will have a use for it. haha.

Re: I took off my nasty wrap around spoiler today

don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but as far as TEMPORARILY covering the holes just to keep water out. get a couple small pieces of automotive vinyl, the stuff they use to make graphics, and put it over the holes. it will keep water out, and when you want to remove it, it will come off easily.
thats what I'm going to do with mine if I ever find anyone to buy my camaro spoiler off of it, cover the holes with vinyl until I get another wing, then figure which holes I still need, and weld the rest closed
