Hey, thinking about having a paintjob done eventually and just wanted to check on the average estimates for a full gloss black paint job at places like maaco or etc...

There are variables like: type of paint, bodywork, prep work, sealers and if you want the inners painted which looks like a definite. I would say $1000 is pretty fair....with an average amount of prep and good paint. If you go with a straight enamel you could save a couple hundred. I've been out of the trade for years but unless things ahave changed drastically (ie, the cost of materials) this is your ballpark.
Im pretty sure Maaco will shoot the outside for like $500 but you may not be too happy w/o proper prep and good paint. Estimates are always free and usually dont take more than 10-15 minutes. Stop by and find out. Then post back for everyone.

 

Just to help you out. My paint is costing $3500. But it has body work at $50/hr, good prep, PPG paint, he does very professional paint jobs.

 

I spent a little over 1,000 bucks just in materials. Not sure how many hours I have into doing everything but it's quite a few.

 

I have about 750 in materials and did all the labor myself. Thats base, clear, epoxy primer, high build primer, Rage gold (high class bondo), painters paper, 1", 1/2" and 1/8th inch painters tape, tack cloths, gun cleaner, Prepsol and a disposable respirator for my nephew

IF you go to maaco, talk to them about a REAL paintjob, NOT a quicky. If you can trailer the car over, you tape off everything, you remove everything and scuff everything for primer. Wipe it down with mineral spirits, let it flash off and cover it with a cheapie cotton car cover. When the car gets to maaco, they'll Wipe it down, tighten up any tape seams and shoot 2 coats of primer (wet on wet), flash it, spray 3 color coats, flash it and 3 clear coats. Let it sit over night. Then throw on your dust cover, tow it home and reassemble. Fix any drips or runs in the clear coat, buff with 3M perfect-it followed by the polishing compound of your choice (I like Menzerna). Wax it 2 weeks later (NXT Tech wax is the best cheap OTC wax).

Ive done this a few times with cars. If you want a cheaper and arguably a better finish, talk to your local automotive tech school and specify that the teacher uses it as a demonstration car or someone in the senior or honors class does it.

Most real collision shops charge 70-80 an hour here for labor, you'll save probably 500 by asking the body shop what you can do to speed the process up. Spraying paint takes probably 2-3hrs total depending on the car and how equipped the body shop is. The rest of the bill is disposal, materials and grunt work before color.
3grand is a reasonable starting price from a reputable shop.

It will depend on your color and the brand of materials you want to use.


Sherwin Williams was the most expensive at around $1500, Dupont was the cheapest around $900, and PPG was in the middle around $1200.

That included everything from Primer up to clear coat...

At $1000 I have to wonder what kind of job you would get, if you do not care and just want it to look better and not faded, they may not mask things off and the definately will not remove any parts to do a job "right" but it would look a little better.

Sherwin Williams Ultrabase is also known as Napa's TEC/base. Probably too late to help Okfoz; but something to stick in your hats. Napa is also rebranding their value line 'cross/FIRE' to ACME. some of you older guys might remember ACME was an independant name for SW Ultrabase. Its not now, its the budget line, which is still good paint.

I forgot to mention I get a discount at Napa, so I probably had 850-900 plus I had a few things left over.

 

My brother is getting his Porsche 924 repainted yellow (Velocity Yellow from the Corvette). He's doing the prep work himself (sanding, taking everything apart) so the body man has only the primer paint and clear coat to apply.
He quoted him 1000€ ($1300).

 

Velocity Yellow is awesome. Tell him to get a 3rd gen

 

I used the Ultra 7000 series paints, they are the Sherwin Premium paints... I am not sure the order beyond the top I think it is Dimension then Genesis, but like I said, I only used the 7000 which really holds up great and it looks fabulous... I think most paint shops do not use it because it costs so darned much...

The down side is for one of their lines they only have standard colors so they are limited... I want to think the Hot Rod or one of the other car mags did an article on them not too long ago...

prep it your self then take it to paint.... prep is where the money is

 

^yup.

Mine was $6,100, but the body was rough. Dents and dings in every panel, plus the flames were $1,500 of that.

Lesson learned: do the sanding, straightening, priming yourself.
