After my jaw dropping experience when I found out how much new gas struts all round was going to be - I was determined to find another way.

I have just found a guy around the corner from me in Canada that actually does Refurb Struts for all kinds of vehicles.

The refurb price is very reasonable and as an extra bonus, he is going to set up the rear hatch struts so the hatch will rise on it's own when I hit the release (how cool huh!).

This guy gets in struts from all over the world, just have to take them off and send them to him.

how much did you price them at? I was able to get all four for $108 at my local part store

 

yeah i wanna know how much it was to. 108 dollars sounds crazy to me... the good ol vise grips were only 15 bucks.

 

We carry used pieces that work great at a fraction of the cost of new ones.

Its less than 100 bux CDN and he's gonna set up the backs so they raise the trunk when I pop it. Any of you guys have that feature

He was telling me that he does lots of work for the dealership in refurbing struts and doing specials for Ricers.

I wonder how many extra pounds of force it will take to raise the hatch right when you pop it. And what that will do to the hatch alignment and attaching points... especially over time.

 

For the most part, the hatch (or hood for that matter) should raise on it's own when you unlock it when the struts are in good condition.

 

I think it will take allot of force to raise the hatch with the stuts from the "just popped" position. Look at the angle they are at, then consider how much weight they have to lift. How do you plan on closing it?

I agree with deadbird, the hood/hatch should raise on it's own. After you give it a little push in the correct direction. They are called assist supports for a reason.

 

Are you guys saying your struts dont lift/raise the hatch!New struts will jolt the damn thing hard as hell & for a couple years at that.At least mine always been that way.Personally though i like scoping for(somewhat)worn out ones at the JY.These will, slowly & gradually lift the hatch.Nice & smooth.No crashing, hit a brick wall stop like new ones do.To each their own.

 

I won't use the hatch release for that reason. I nearly had to sit on my hatch to get it to shut when I had the wrap around wing off. And have mercy if you opened it and had your face anywhere in the lift zone w/o holding on for dear life.
With my camaro, the hatch will pop and motor will lift the hatch but, it takes a hand to start the lifting process. I know they are on their way out but, I still have my 'bird ones which wouldn't lift the aero wing but, I'm sure the RS spoiler won't phase them lol.

 

Thats just the thing though.I always use the switch & my dont have the motor.So with new struts i had to make a mad dash from standing next to the car with the door open.Hitting the switch, then run like hell.before the hatch slams open.Semi used struts work great.Almost looks like i have the motor.Opens so slow & steady.

 

I put the heavy duty shocks on my hatch years ago and the hatch would raise up on it's own. With the rear louvers on the car, the hatch pops and will not lift until I lift it. The heavy duty struts are for cars with the large spoilers like Trans Ams and cars with louvers and wiper assemblies. The standard shocks are all you need if you have a Camaro spoiler, no spoiler, or no assesories on the rear.
