Subframe repair questions..

Does anyone know if replacement subframe rails are available? Have rust around the trans crossmember mounting holes on my '84 causing it to twist slightly. Hoping replacement rails are available, if not I guess I'll have to try the fabrication route.. Thanks!

Well, if you want whole new frame rails and are prepared to weld them on, then a GM parts dealer would be your best bet. Presuming you have a good dealership close to you with parts staff that aren't total jerks, you should be able to go to them and look up which of those rails you would need for your tranny application. They most likely won't be available, but if your parts guys aren't jerks, there is a way they can search the inventories of GM dealerships across the country and maybe, just maybe, they will find what you are looking for that is left over. Either that or they might be available from GM's Vintage Parts place, but since they are body parts they probably will not be available there.

If GM is out, then you are SOL on new ones most likely. You might consider finding a wrecked donor car with good rails if they are that bad.

Re: Subframe repair questions..

i know that the rears are available, not sure about the fronts. honestly it would be much more of a pain in the *** to replace over fabricating something to correct the problem. and since it is a unibody car, you could replace the front girdle, yet it is not a comonly done procedure, most unibody cars that need that much replacement after an accident are considered totaled. not saying that it isn't done but most of the time it isnt worth it to fix, due to what is involved. best bet is to see if it can be cut out and have a section droped in place, or see if it can be plated. do you have any pics available.
