Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

They will fit the body, but the holes are probably not the same. Not to mention if i remember correctly, 85-90 is more curvy which may not match the rest of the kit on the 84.

Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

the cushioning underneath may be different. I just spent $100 on the same body kit, but i was installing it on my '88 base model, of which shares the same cushioning and impact bumpers. It may just need trimming being that it has the similar slots in the bumper ahead of the headlight. Just so you know, the plastic bezel for the headlight is different for the 82-84, i believe it's more squarish. Not sure if it would come into contact with bumper trying to put them up.

Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

are you getting just the GFX? im pretty sure u will need the 85-89 front and rear end as well. 84redta is right the earlier trans-am was more squared in the front

Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

got all of the gfx from a 83 trans am at a local u pull it. the front bumper cover was beyond repair though. the front fender gfx were 3.49 each, the rocker panels were 7.49 each the rear quarter gfx were 1.99 each and the rear bumper cover was 29.99. also got 2 more fender scoops for 3.49 each and a formula hood for 30 bucks. good deal?

The way you describe the pieces, it sounds more like the 85-90 style ground effects that you bought. Were the front and rear ground effects molded into the bumper cover with separate extensions of the ground effects for the rear quarter and front fender? Even better yet, can you post a picture?

Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

the front and rear bumper had the moulded in gfx all the sideskirt pieces are separate. they came off an 83 and had some original rivets in spots holding them in.

someone changed that 83 to 85-90 ground effects then. In 83, only the Daytona Pace Cars had what would be considered full ground effects, which bolted on to the base model bumper covers. The majority of 83 T/As either had nothing or had the small flares that were just in front of the front and rear wheels. 84 T/As offered the same ground effects that the 83 Daytona cars had and they then changed to the style you saw in 85.

Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

i put the pieces on my ta and they match up perfectly so maybe somebody put the 84 kit on there. cause its the original body kit on my car and its the same from that 83 at the junkyard unless it wasnt really an 83

Re: ta ground effects interchangeability?

that picture is of a 1989 Turbo Trans Am, so both your 83 and the 83 in the junkyard were converted by previous owners to 85-90 style ground effects and presumably bumper covers if the conversion is complete. Here are pictures of my 84 T/A with its original ground effects:

They sit lower overall because they are shorter and they are bolted on to the bottom of the bumper covers rather than molded in.

Nope. His must've been an 85 model year car if he bought it in 84 with the taller ground effects. And personally I like the 84 ground effects and nose better... but that's probably because I own a car with them They're definitely harder to find
