Wow. A car with hacked wiring is a "walk away" moment for me being as I know next to nothing about it.
Wired in an EQ yrs ago convinced it was right. Worked great...for about 10 min til it started smoking at the 1st stoplight. Frantically ripped that thing loose and tossed it out the window. thank god I never secured it.
Got some dirty looks

Mine was given, so there was no walking away haha. I basicly had someone do the wirering for me, while I watched, helped, and learned. So it's all good. Only thing that hasen't been fixed is the rear center brake light. That is next on the list, but honnestly I don't care, the 2 other brakes lights work. And that's good enough.

Well I am buying a 86 Iroc Z28 On Friday! With the TPI in it runs great, But you won't believe this, Has a sunroof.. The kid said he thought it was factory. He almost convinced me it was, the job was done so well. The only thing it doesn't have is AC.
I tried to find a forum to ask if I would be able to put AC in it, but couldn't find one. Maybe someone could answer that Question for me. I have a 91 RS 350 TBI and a 89 RS V6 2.8 Both have AC. Could I take AC out of my 91? would that work?

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
Probably not because the 91 has a serpentine belt system and the 86 has a v-belt system. Plus any V8 thirdgen prior to 1988 has the compressor mounted to the driver's side (v-belt) and V8s from 1988 onward have the compressor on the passenger side (serp. belt). You might be able to reuse some components but the lines/ac compressor are different.

A/C can be swapped in either way with new pullies and brackets, whether you keep the V-belts or the serpentine belt.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
Oh man where should I start... Lets see:
-Edelbrock headers installed and EGR plugged off with a rubber hose and a bolt.
-I believe my from seats are out of a late 80's/early 90's Grand Am
-The car HAD power windows and mirrors until someone replaced the door panels or whole door and was too sorry to switch everything back. Now I have crank windows and 2 useless window buttons in the center console.
-The 2 electrical fans were hardwired to a bad relay, so they wasn't even running at all.
-The 2 hoses that come from the oil cooler adapter above the filter were cut and not plugged, yet some how it leaked more oil from the bad oil pressure sending unit than it did from there. And yeah, he drove it like that.
-Purple valve covers were spray painted silver while still on the engine (judging by the over spray everywhere)
-No clue where he bought these 7mm spark plug wires, but they're so long there was literally 2-3 that were rolled up in a nice 1-2 ring coil and zip tied to other wires
-He tried scraping the rear defroster off the rear window which I didnt know until I hit the button and all my lights went dim.
-Wiper blades were way too long and rub the paint on the roof line and driver side A-pillar.
-Tiny little import pre-heat catalytic converter installed.
-Radio bezel/center console held up by pieces of wood shoved in the gap between it and the center floor console.
-Spring loaded hood latch (the J latch) sping had popped loose on 1 side, so instead of fixing it, or hell even removing it.... he beat it flat with a sledge.
-Passenger side fog light zip tied in place.
So far, thats all I've found but I've only had the car 2 weeks lol. It surprised the **** out of me that after all of that, the pull down motor for the hatch actually works.... even though 2 of the bolts were loose, throwing the alignment off and making it pull down 1 side and not the other lol.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
this thread makes me sad. When I got a parts car once that I removed the drivetrain from, the Edelbrock TES headers were welded to the y-pipe. I didn't have many tools back when this was going on, so it was very interesting to try to wrestle out the engine with those headers unbolted but still wrapped around the engine block and not wanting to let go! I can't even imagine how they were able to get in there and weld all the way around the collector with it attached to the car (or why they would want to)!

Would be a LOT better if the company flattened out the front and back of the car to actually look like the 69 it's supposed to... That curved spoiler REALLY ruins the look of the back of the car, and the tail lights look NOTHING like those on a 1st gen... Super hideous. And some chrome accents as seen on the 69 would be nice... Don't see much of the interior, but I'd bet they didn't change much.

I like the front, but the back is a little iffy. If they straightend out the spoiler, it would help.

Picked up a 91 RS TBI car that was Z28 cloned/350 carb. Guy must have been an electrician/telephone guy. Wire nuts and phone cable for amps and speakers! He used a fuse box that had the big glass fuses in them but replaced the fuses with 3/8th's bolts. Instead of building a sub box, he cut some 2x4's to frame out the well in the trunk, wood screwed through the 2x4's into the sheet metal to support a sheet of plywood that housed 2 10" subs! (if you know who you are/who did this, tell me so I can smack 'em!) What an idiot!

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
PO had a 90s stereo DIY installed and for memory he didn't feel the need for a fuse box or connectors, or even tie wraps to hang this memory saver up, he took the spatula shaped elec' connector and jabbed it in the fuse box, didnt want an ugly wire hanging and wrapped it around the harness to keep it suspended and taped it on the radio's equivelant. i was about to remove it, didn't think anything of it, and it fell out and almost started a fire, stupidly i grabbed it before anything happened. luckily, i didnt get shocked or burnt lol. i looked and it didnt burn through the harness, but did kinda melt this nice spiral design into the damn cluster of wires, now memory is an ipod

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
1) Check Engine Light bulb removed to "fix" the broken 7747 ECU (strobing CEL).
2) Tranny cooler lines hacked and external cooler added with too large of hose and hose clamps (blew a line off second day I had it)
3) Heater core bypassed, but the hose was plugged with spare lug nut; rear half of intake manifold was always wicked hot, caused temps to fluctuate upwards of 240*F sometimes.
4) 700r4 input shaft O-ring removed to force engagement of overrun clutches for engine breaking in 4th (Side-effect: NO TCC LOCKUP! 6 months before I figured that one out.)
5) Chassis grounded with 14 gauge wire. Caught fire after purchasing when I had a short from the dual battery switch being loosely mounted
6) CB antennae mounted through roof, antennae deliberately cut, but mount & wire left in place.
7) EGR vacuum hose plugged with epoxy

1:The previous owner put a sheet of metal on the floor with rivets to hide a rust hole.
2: Check engine light bulb removed because it was on.
3: Rocker panel emblems filled with some kind of fiberglass putty and then painted on.
4: Paintjob on the car is terrible... Full of orange peel.

The previous owner of my car wired his new radio into the ECU harness. I could hear my RPMs through the speakers and had all sorts of weird issues. Trunk Release button turned on E-Brake light.
He bought over-sized exhaust tips and stuffed cotton rags in the gap between them.
I find more half-assed work the more I dig into this thing.

I'd have to say the wiring me and my friend did to hook up my new stereo. No fires and it sounds good so I guess we did it right!

LOL, my 91 RS had shelf brackets holding in the radiator, the fan was wired with house wiring and wire nuts and you used to have twist two wires to turn the fan on. the exhaust was hung up by coat hanger

Well a quick removal of the dash showed a cut ground wire. I patched it up and it fixed the issue. Electricity was being sent to my e-brake light, i guess it had the closest path of least resistance.

I've owned 3 3rd gens, and not a single F'ing one had the eBrake hooked up!!!! Mine works beautifully since I hooked it all back up. I just don't get the reasoning.
Now that Bin Laden's been dealt with, those same Navy seals should go door to door looking for the PO's of our cars to deal out some Chuck Norris style justice for their crimes against F bodies.

Oh yeah, and another thing, when people put in interior screws that are larger than the original. If your gonna use screws from the hardware store at least use the right size, sheesh. I mean how hard is it to go to the junkyard and get some interior screws. I pulled a bunch last time I went, they gave em to me for free...

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?
Amen brother.

In 2008 when I first got the IROC, I noticed the previous owner stuffed a rag over top of the carburetor as a new "filter" since the filter had a rip in it.
Not even sure how it drove to my house like that. Ran pretty decently for having a rag choking the carb.

Doesn't matter what I pull from the cars at the JY... I always snag the hardware . Probably because my car is/was missing so much. Or what was there is broken (I hate rust ).

We should have a thread titled what is the most country, *******, hillbilly thing you've found done to your car, because when I got mine it looked like so backwoods hillbillies had owned it.

Not my car but while I was at U-pull it today the first thing I saw was this 84ish Firebird sitting in the front row with 01 spray painted on the door. As soon as I saw it I said to my friend "Dude, I'm going to buy that car". But alas I dont know if I have enough money to buy it. The best part is that its a V8 with a near mint dash pad!
Sorry my friend didnt tell me when he was taking the picture so I look like a complete idiot. It also says 01 on the roof.

In place of wire loom, i use electrical tape all the time. I probably have used it on every stereo install I have ever done. If done correctly it looks very professional. It comes in colors too, if thats your thing.

mine is not as bad as these but when the trunk latch went on my car i had to bungee strap it down while i was waiting for the pull down motor and when the heatercore went i cut off the broken piece of tube and used another peice of tubing i had bent it into place and duct taped it on for the drive home
