Your right. I don't believe you at all. For one, who is gonna wanna leave in a tool inside of the oil pan? I know for a fact that in order for the wrench to get inside the pan, the pan must of been off of the engine. Also common sense tells me that the pan must of been free of any oil so it be pretty dumb not to hear the wrench slide around within the oil pan when trying to move it around in position with the engines cross member in the way. Might I add, why would someone put in condom in the oil pan? Was there any intimate moments under the 3rd Gen while on a lift or jack stands? I doubt it. And even if a angry mechanic stuffed the condom down the oil dipstick tube, the cylinder blow-by gases collect inside the engine block. After 3,000 miles, the engines oil has been in contact with blow-by gases which causes the oil to become quite acidic. The latex is a natural rubber so it will degrade fast. To further accelerate the breakdown of the latex molecules, we have the high temperatures of the engine oil. High temp and acidic oil will break down the latex rather quickly. So to find a condom in the oil pan is highly doubtful. You could find it in tiny chunks inside the oil filter, but your claim does not fly in my book.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

there was the usual ducttape/safety pins headliner and radiator filled with mold and gravel stuff going on but the previous owners attempts at being artistic still take the cake, arts & crafts felt superglued all over the center console in geometric patterns, baby blue exterior housepaint slopped so thick on the louvers that after having probably a decade to dry it still ran like mud when you washed it

thats def the first thing i did - just went through the entire car making a checklist of horrifically stereotypical DIY camaro "customization", people treat these things like hippie vans

it also had the stock steering wheel in the trunk replaced by a red/purple vinyl one with ninja symbols on it and paddle shifters connected to nothing

yeah the condom part was a fib (really just an inside joke) but i did find bits of the oil pan seal, me and my friend thought it was pretty funny saying the PO was into mechanophilia. There was a wrench dont know how it got in there but the PO wasn't too bright.

now keeping to the original post, the PO of my car also used bailing wire to hold up the exhaust, it did work for like 4 years until my exhaust hit the road coming home from work, just another excuse for me to buy a new exhaust got an edelbrock cat back now, now here is another ghetto thing, i had to find a way to mount it, i might get a pic up of how i did it lol

When I was a kid (i say kid, i was probably 16 or so) I used bailing wire to fix my exhaust. It was a 82 Ford Escort GL. I didn't spend a dime more on that car than I absolutely had to. I hated it, constantly breaking down.

Anyway, back on point, Bailing wire makes an excellent exhaust hanger. I jumped (or jumped in my mind. I was probably just unloading the suspension) over railroad tracks and never knocked it back loose.

Good times man, good times.

Now oil seal, thats a silicone material and that does last even with the harshed conditions of being inside an engine block. You gotta admit that picture that has the caption "YOU MAD", is really good in this case.

Yeah I am going in as Auto Tech for 2 years then Mechanical Engineer. It was meant more as a joke and I should of emphasized more on it, it was pretty funny how that guy left that wrench in the oil pan is still a puzzle. also Krik bailing wire is great lol, used it to keep my hood on when the hood mounts were bent looped it through whatever holes I could find in the hood and fenders. Keeping to the topic a bit more the PO used ripped up paper towel or something like that as sound deadening material

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

clothes hangers is an infection man. Its a universal tool for anything you can think of. Your friend Say's "", then you say "clothes hanger." Works every time.. Now paper towels as a sound deadener, thats a new one. I used popsicle sticks inbetween the sheet metal (to stop the trunk rattle) of my moms Mercury Tracer's trunk when I got my first sound system back in 99. Now that was ghetto!!!

Got an 86 IROC Z28 a few months ago and the wiring was a nightmare. Everything you can imagine (door locks, windows, radio, fog lights etc.) were all spliced and wrapped with electrical tape. Horn was mounted just above the fuse box with wires running through the door to under the hood.

sad, im not gonna lie, my radio wires have black tape. i just hate when u can see the cheap jobs done. i had a red wire from i guess an amp, running from the battery, along the top of the fender, into the door, behind the dash and hanging so u can see it, into the center console, out the side on drivers side, and under the seat

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Total guess but I bet the PO had to change the oil pan and after he started installing the new one he dropped the wrench in after working on the front of the motor. Probably thought it was too hard to raise the motor up again to get to it so he gave up and left it in.

Never mind, I just don't know

when my v6 blew up there was a pair of random pliers in the oil puddle with the pieces of shattered rod and piston, seamed to have come from in side the engine because i know they weren't there before thew blow up, i also kno my motor was rebuilt by the po and he liked his drugs so i am not surprised lol,

I have a hard time believing your claims. I have an 86 IROC too. In my fuse box area, there is no room "just above" my fuse box. But there's plenty of room under the fusebox. Also, since the fuse box is inside the cabin, why would the PO run wires from the cabin and through the door, when you can easily run wire through the rubber boot/grommet around the steering shaft? As for the foglights, there's no real reason to rewire, unless you want the foglights to operate with the highbeams. I'm sorry but I do have a hard time believing your claim.

That ain't safe mate... spend $150 for a wire-feed welder from Harbor Freight and learn to use it.

The usualy stuff. Newspaper to protect the filer neck in a weird mounted gas tank. A bunch of wires twitsted and taped together. About 1 screw holding each item in the interior together. Bondo filler putty used instead of a welding repair. A piece of wire as the new hood release. Yup the usual stuff.

Not only was my 88 Iroc lifted a few inches with spacers in the springs to fit 22's, the guy also used random electrical wire to wire the fans straight to the fuse box so that the fan would turn on when the car did!! Ghetto fabulous!!

The other week while I was changing the water pump and FPR, I discovered the mechanic who had previously worked on my car before my skills were up to par, did not tighten any of the runner to manifold bolts to spec. The two lower bolts on the driver runner were only screwed in by a couple turns, not even hand tight. Worst of all however, was when I noticed the fitting on the feed fuel line where it goes to the rails was damp with fuel. I was able to turn it back and forth with my hand which means it was only hand tightened. The scariest part is I had put 15k miles on the car with it like this.

Next thing I found out was that I got 2.73 rear gears instead of the 3.73. And that the motor was replaced with an 85 Truck 305 HO.

Now there's going to be a Carbed 350/T56 with a 9 bolt 3.89 posi so it's all good. Atleast it was originally a manual tranny car
i have a 92 rs camaro and we bought it with no motor or tranny. so we had the engine out of my dads 82 chevy truck sitting behind the shed with a truck bed mat laid over it and sitting on the hood of the truck. we think its got close to 300k miles on it. it had been sitting for six years. within 30mins of pulling it down to the garage we had it running. just needed the carb rebuilt.

My camaro that came stock with a v6 is getting a 350 v8 truck motor.

depending how you put it in, its not ghetto. its just not very smart to use a motor thats been sitting for a long time in the weather with that many miles on it...

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

my girlfriends 86 Z28 was originally a 5-speed car. Later in its life it was "professionally" converted to an auto. When doing a motor swap shortly after buying it I found some interesting things. First it was swapped to a 700R4, but no type of lock-up system was done to it. They only used 4 bellhousing bolts. I guess they didnt feel like putting the top two in. They also had AMERICAN converter to flexplate bolts (it uses metric) and they were all obviously loose and falling out. How it didnt make any noise is beyond me. Also to cover the shifter hole, they used a very thin piece of galvinized steel, sealed with a ton of orange silicone and a couple self-tapping screws. Then i guess they relized they didnt have a spot for the auto shift cable, so they just peeled up a spot like a can opener and jammed the cable through.

this has been all properly fixed

I must admit, I'm the one that did this. We swapped a steering column into my friends car and instead of getting a vats bypass (he was too cheap) we soldered the wires to each side of the key. works reliably to this day (i did it over two years ago)

a resistor from radio shack would do the same thing, for about $.50 and its easier to tuck out of the way.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

My first car was given to me as a gift for my birthday, Im pretty sure I got screwed on this deal. It was a 1990 geo prizm. It had no back window, no trunk lid, and no rear bumper. No the friend that gave it to me took a piece of 4x4 and lag bolted that on as his bumper, couldnt even paint the damn thing to make it look alittle better. The trunk lid, I kid you not was masonite board, again not painted, and as for the back window, wal-mart bags (Christmas tree ornaments in the south) all taped together with duct tape. I guess he really didnt care if he could see out of the back or not. Yeah I got that car, drove it for a week and then stuck someother shmoe with the car but made 600 bucks. I think I am the smart one in this deal, yet I still felt screwed.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

So far the worst thing that I found on my 87 camaro LT was the PO thought he was a body and fender guy and painted the car. Looks like **** not to mention the 1 in of bondo on the B post between the T-top and the rear hatch that he didnt even sand smooth before he painted the car. But I didnt mention that after spending 2hr sanding it off there was no reason for it to be there in the first place.

I havent really even started to get into the restoration yet thought. Kinda makes me nervous after hearing some of these stories

I sealed up some holes in my drivers side floorboard with caulking, sheet metal and rivets! Actually worked great but I should probably just replace the whole pan...

Maybe we NY guys ought to get together and do a group purchase on floor pans... Since mine's been sitting, almost every time I look at it, it's got a few more holes. Been busy patching holes here there and everywhere (between the quarter panel, the doors, the floor pan, and the unused holes in the firewall) for a week now.

Luckily, Friday, I get the rest of the Rust Bullet I need to get the underside of the car done and start getting things back together again . Only been six months or so that everything's finally been apart.

And yes, I went through and did some work to my wire harnesses... Every wire not necessary has been removed (meaning anything and everything to do with the automatic transmission with the NSS connector). Rerouted the factory reverse light wires to the C100 as per late third gens, but haven't done the engine harness side yet (only the dash harness is completely done for now) because I'll need something to do while snow flies. No electrical tape except for what covers the harness, but I've now run out of heat shrink .

However, I have 3 relays behind my dash (trunk release, VATS module disable instead of starter, and starter enable), none of which are mounted to anything. And I forgot that I didn't cut and solder in my extensions for when I mounted my turn signal flasher in the convenience center with the hazard flasher... I used those crimp connectors that shrink with heat, and that's why I had to run another wire across the dash to the flasher when the turn signals stopped working (wire pulled out of the connector ) . Only fixed the wire that pulled apart... Left the rest alone as it's taped inside the harness and still works fine.

Re: What is the most ghetto thing you've found done to your car?

Whoever changed the fuel pump was the BIGGEST idiot. First off it had no sock over it. There wasn't a hose connecting the fuel pump to the sending unit (it was the tip of the pump shoved in the sending unit. It seems to me they only bought a pump and not a kit. Plus they cut the metal above the gas tank to get to it.
