im looking to paint my89 pontiac firebird and i want to paint it white but i dont know the stuff to do it with.


any ideas on:

paint guns
acrylics
and other materials needed


btw im new at this so please dont judge me.
im just a guy trying to learn.

 

ok so white paint is one of the easiest to paint, and for body work white is very forgiving vs black.

here is the thread from years ago when i did my camaro much more custom than white but the steps are all there.

what color is the car now? if its a color change you have to pull the doors hood hatch ect and jamb the car out in the new color the put all the parts back and paint the rest to get the best job.

you need a good big compressor like 10 cfm big, paint guns take alot of air and d/a takes even more air.

as for a gun devibiss finish line is a good starter gun with a 1.2 tip you can do base and clear with the same gun.

depends on where your doing the work? if you have a booth or not, how humid is it, temp is not that big an issue, humidity is the one to watch, the dryer the better.

 

Paint? Napa base/clear. Acrylic? AVOID 'single stage Urethane' this is base and clear in 1 can. You absolutely can NOT fix screw-ups with this so AVOID IT.

Urethane OEM paint? Napa or if you want to go Acrylic Enamel Id still suggest napa, unless you want like 40 dollar a gallon Industrial Acrylic Enamel.

Gun? Bar non for a budget? the Astro brand guns are way better quality than any of the other knocksoffs. For a Primer gun? pick up the HVLP gun from Harbor Freight/Princess Auto when its on sale for 12 Bucks.

Youre also going to need a selection of Duroblok sanding blocks, a couple packages of sandpaper (80grit, 120grit (wet/dry) 220wetdry, 400wetdry, 600wetdry, 800wetdry and 1000grit wetdry. Id also get some 1500 wetdry before you buff it. Also get a can of Bondo Professional bodyplastic.

Use a good epoxy sealer under your basecoat. After you buff the paint, let it sit a week before you wax it to let all the solvents gas out

 

accept one thing if you have a good budget for paint it isnt too expensive but using PPG paint can be another choice that would work and it turns out great. has a good shine. and if you go to NAPA they have a really nice gun for about 120 and just use the harbor freight gun for primer. ill get the brand of that gun from napa for you if you would like.
