Can you do this?

I have some aftermarket fog lights that I will be hooking up to a Camaro that doesn't have fog lights stock.

My plan is to wire the lights into the low beam head light wiring so when I turn my lights on the fogs come on also. But when the high beams are selected the fogs turn off.

Is this possible or is the voltage from the low beams to much for the fog lights? The fog lights are a ebay pair that are Halogen H3.

Thanks guys!

The factory had the High Beams set up to turn off when the High Beams were on, but its just a matter of finding the relay that controls that.

I hear, that in some states, it is illegal to have your fog lights on, with the High Beams on though. Not here in Texas for me it isn't, but check your local laws.

Re: Can you do this?

Yeah my Cobalt does the same thing when it goes into high beam the fogs shut off.
The thing is I'm not going to tie into a relay I'm just going to put the power and ground on the fog lights splice them into the low beam power line so when ever the lows are on the fogs are automatically on and when I go into high beam the fogs will shut off because the lows are getting power anymore. Am I correct in thinking this?

You don't want the Fog Lights drawing power from the same wire as the Low Beams.

2 reasons....Your Low Beams will get dimmer, because they are sharing power with the Fog Lights through the same wire.

And more importantly, that could be too much draw on the wire, blowing the fuse or worse....Overheating, melting the insulation & causing a short. If the fuse doesn't blow in time, your looking at a potential fire hazard.

You can use that same wire as a trigger on a Relay, that turns on a draws power from somewhere else & feeds the Fog Lights, through the Relay.

Re: Can you do this?

Buy a 20 amp rocker switch from Autozone/Pepboys/Advanced/O'Reilly etc and run a wire from the fuse box to the switch to the positive lead on the fog lights and ground the fogs to the chasis. Easy.

Re: Can you do this?

This is just my .02 but foglights aren't meant as driving lights, they are blinding even with low beams. I'd wire them to a seperate switch completley because I hate being blinded by foglights.

Re: Can you do this?

do you want them for appearance , or for function ? i have mine for function , ( they do look good ) some mornings here on the gulf coast can have bad fog . i have mine tapped into a source on fuse panel that is off with ign. sw. off . pwr. to led sw. , to lights with an inline fuse , gnd to chassis . sw. with leds can be found every where . make sure led when lit is pointed down , and lights pointed low . for your sake and other drivers , aim them low . good luck .

Thanks guys.
The idea was to not need a switch becuase I always want the fogs on if the lights are on. I noticed while looking at it today when high beams come on the low beams also stay on so no matter what to be legal I can't run them straight into the headlights.

Reason why is in the Cobalt when the fogs are on you get a much better lit area around the sides of the car so you can have a better chance of seeing something run out of the woods into the road. I realize the way the fogs are on the camaro this won't be the case but I always liked the look of fogs on when low beams are on.
