86 with 92 headlights?
don't ask how or why too much to explain
but i noticed my 1986 headlight wiring has 3 wires
92 headlight has 4 wires but 2 are the same color and in the same socket/connection
so is it a straight forward splice in?
anyone have any info on this upgrade/conversion?

Re: 86 with 92 headlights?
are you trying to put the smaller 92 headlights in your 86 or are you asking if the motors are interchangable
i don't know about the interchange part but I have a good suggestion for the other thing... swap your 86 motors onto the 92 headlight assemblies, or just swap the part the headlight is bolted to, the part that flips up, I forget how but they do come apart pretty easily....
hope this helps/

Re: 86 with 92 headlights?
so just wiring in the headlights directly isn;t gona cut it electronically?
i get that the 87 + years use a different system but im just wondering why does my car care or know there is a different headlight pluged in?
not thinking about motors im saying just specifically the headlights
i guess what im asking, can i get the 91-92 headlights and headlights only to work with my 86 wiring?
i mean in basic terms a headlight is a headlight. and there are 3 colors in my 86 headlight. tan green and black
same with these 91-92 headlights i have with the plug/wiring. tan green and black
i'm gona try it out, if i run into problems o well.
thanks for the info deadbird

Re: 86 with 92 headlights?
Sorry about that, for some reason I got headlight motors stuck in my head.
The wiring should just splice color for color. The glass housed lamps (sealed beam) have to have a ground wire as the glass insulates them from a chassis ground.
I've never really had the opportunity to see the 91-92 lamp wiring up close and I don't remember what lamp they take but, as a guess, they may have some way of getting chassis ground just by being bolted in. That would eliminate the 3rd (black/ground) wire.

Re: 86 with 92 headlights?
ok thanks,
no worries,
i did a knight rider kitt, and the bigger headlights on my 86 are showing through the turn signal blackouts and is illuminating all the hardware keeping the blackouts from flying offf.
looks like crap at night. or with the headlights up i should say.
closed looks mint.
so i wana try putting the smaller headlights/trim(i'lll make it fit) and the beam of the headlights will be above the turn signals
thats the plan. treating my blackouts like its a 91-92 bumper the headlights are above that line.

I'm trying to figure WHY you wanna out the smaller lights in.....
Without the smaller plastic surround, you'll have gaps.

Re: 86 with 92 headlights?
no i wont. i know what you mean but...
1. i have a knight rider bumper with turn signal blackouts. so that eyelid gap is gone kinda like the 91-92 bumpers.
2. i want the 91-92 headlights because the earlier big headlights are showing THROUGH the turn signal blackouts and in affect showing all teh hardware holding them on the bumper
so i want the smaller headlights with the trim so the headlight beam will be above that blackout body line and not through it but over it.
i'll post pics when i'm done cuz im not sure how else to describe it.
i can get the trim from 91-92 to fit. not easily but i'll make it work.
and i was just mroe concerned about the wiring but that question has been put to rest.
so wish me luck. i got 3 days off coming up this week so i hope to try it out then.
and as far as the metal frame/bracket i'll figure soemthing out either fabricate the smaller head luight to sit in the biggger metal frame from 86 or unbolt everything and bolt in the 91-92 frame and see what happens.
either way i will get these smaller headlights and trim to work for my car.
thanks guys

Re: 86 with 92 headlights?
ok guys yesterday i accolmplished this task.
was fairly simple process. majority for everything just bolted in.
aligning the parts with the hood and fender wasnt fun and im still not 100% satisfied with the driver light as far as being flush with the hood but it got real dark and had to stop.
anyways heres 2 photos. i like the look and the light doesnt reveal the blackout hardware not nearly as much.
im happy with that.
plus the 91-92 headlight trim is perfect for the blackout setup. no having to cut the lip off the 82-90 style and sanding down and painting.
