What would YOU recommend?
So, I just got done stripping out almost the whole back of my Camaro, plus the dorky CHMSL they had in 1986, I bought a spoiler from I believe a 1988 Camaro, with the built in third brake light. just so I'm sure it's legal and what not.
But ANYWAY, here's the thing, on the hatch on 1986 Camaros, there was of course that CHMSL, and holding it on were two big plastic screws, torx heads I believe, but they pop out anyway. So everything's going great, I'll probably have the spoiler and third brake light working soon, but what I need help with is the two probably 3/8th inch holes left in the glass, where the torx head plastic screws were. I'll add pictures so no one gets confused with what I'm talking about.
The way I see it, my only options are, buying some sort of black plastic double sided screws, some sort of glass filler, if anything like that is made, or a whole new hatch window, which I don't have the cash for right now unless it's used.

Bump bump bump. Well, time for me to get some sleep, please oh gods of the forum! Provide me with a cheap solution for this slight problem I came across.
My Camaro has to sit inside 24/7 until that hole is filled, with something, or I pick up a used hatch, but I'd prefer not to go buy a whole other hatch after just buying the spoiler..

Well you could put bolts in the holes, but that takes away from looks and depending on time line could rust. You could cover the holes with tape or vinyl decal, but that won't last long. You could get glass filler but you would see the seams. my thoughts there is a company on line that has pretty much anything in the world you can think of I use to use them at my old job it mcmaster carr. I think there will be a lot of people here who know what I'm talking about, anyways. I would look there and try and find a rubber plug that would fit the hole its probably gonna be in the electronics section or plumbing. There website is www.mcmaster.com good luck.

I would fill it with maybe some of the windshield crack filler. If it doesn't look good you could always find a decal to cover it up with too.

I'd see what the local hardware store had - I'malways finding things there. One thing that comes to mind is black rubber washers - usually called fender washers - they are large, but have smaller holes in them, so there's plenty of rubber to cover the hole - with some plastic connectors (like bolts/nuts), could get the holes covered decently and keep the rain out.
Oh - see if the plastic screws from the rear interior panel fit in the holes - they are available in black in the HELP! section of any auto parts store.

Re: What would YOU recommend?
are you trying to disguise the holes or fill them?
if you simply want to fill them, put the bolts back in, and put black RTV in there to take up the space. you wont have any leaks that way.
if you want to disguise the holes, find yourself a window sticker advocating your favorite cause and slap that over top of whatever you want to put in the holes to keep them filled.
or get yourself a rear window spoiler... your choice.
looking at it more, a spoiler might not look all that bad.
(please dont take my camaro card)

Re: What would YOU recommend?
Well thanks for the input guys, I've been thinking about each suggestion, but I can't come to a clear choice at all.
Only thing I can think of is to just buy used or decently priced new hatch glass.
..So much for saving up for that T-56 swap I was thinking about doing.
I bought the new spoiler with the third brake light from a guy off here, real decently priced, $50 shipped, now it's turning into a small project of it's own, just to update the look of the rear a bit!
Don't you guys just love third gens? Such a money pit.

Re: What would YOU recommend?
I don't have any money in mine..... Tons of work though
Anyway, what about those little plastic furniture plugs that go in the screw holes of desks and things. Find some black ones that are the right size and maybe a dab of JB weld on the end to keep them in.
Pop them in and no one will know the difference.
You could put duel CB antennas like the Bandit would run,,,,,.,..... or not.

Re: What would YOU recommend?
Eh, I guess for a temporary solution it'd work. I'll end up investing the money into a new piece of hatch glass though, I want a nice sleek look, like the 88's had, that's the whole reason I bought the newer spoiler. I love the clean look of the 87+ Camaros.

I'll only be a couple more hundred dollars short of my T-56 swap!

Re: What would YOU recommend?
Personally, I would just swap the glass. They sell for around $30 at my local Upull and you can wait and pick either one with defrost or not. I've seen many people bust them up because they can't get rid of them and also because they take up too much space. The most difficult part of that would be separating the deck lid and finding the sealer they use to seal it back up. I wouldn't pull the spoiler from the decklid because the inner posts are often brittle and can easily disintegrate. At least call around and find out what the prices are locally. It's easy to replace if you have a large box to set into the rear hatch area to hold the glass while you unbolt it.
IIRC, they make solid rubber grommets similar to what they use for the firewall but without the hole. Might not look that great but it's an option until then non the less.

The spoiler has been off for a few days now, it'll most likely be off for at least a couple months, probably into mid 2010.
Until I have the cash to get the engine rebuilt, and have the car painted all at once, so it's not a huge pain with painting the engine bay.

That's exactly what I've been looking for, just incase I leave the car outside over night and it rains or what not. Do you think Home Depot would sell anything similar? I'm going to have to check.

Re: What would YOU recommend?
Don't know - worth a look. The ebay ones are actually the bolts that run through the glass to hold the entire rear hatch on the hinges.

Re: What would YOU recommend?
I went down to my local hardware store and got some plastic plugs. They are like little caps but they clip into the hole to provide a tight seal. I picked up 5 of them for like $2 and used them to fill the holes left when i pulled my spoiler off. The actually look pretty nice, but i still wanna get the spoiler back on
