Battery tray rusted through

The battery tray on my '92 RS is rusted through. It holds the battery, but I'm not sure how much longer it will, I mean there is a gaping hole in it lol. My question is, how serious is this? It looks to be a main component to the frame, can I just weld a piece of metal over it? It's wierd, this is a southern car, no rust anywhere on it, except there. Why?!

That's pretty normal. As for repairing it, the best thing to do would be to get some donor sheet metal from another car (junkyard perhaps) then cut out the bad tray out, then weld in a new one. While all these cars really experience this problem, the battery is located on one side or the other depending on the car. Some of them have it on the driver side, or passenger side based on the model of car, and the year of the car. My 1987 305 carbed (LG4) car has it on the passenber side, while my 1985 305 TPI car has it on the driver side.

From a leaking battery. Yes, you can just weld a piece of steel over it. It isn't that important of an area.

There is also the choice of doing the 4th gen battery tray /overflow tank swap. Search it up.
