big hood bird = attention *****?!

Hey guys, well I've been thinking of putting a nice big gold screaming chicken on the hood of my 1991 green trans am convertible. However this seems to get mixed reviews. Some people seem to like it, others mock it. I personally think it looks terrific but I would like some feedback.

Here's a picture of my baby, obviously she needs paint but she'll get it in the spring most likely. I wanna keep the color the original forest green, plus maybe some gold pinstripes and the gold hood bird of course.

Re: big hood bird = attention *****?!

I say go for it. Make car the way you want it to be. Some people will dislike your car choices no matter what you do. I believe they stopped hood emblems around 86 so you would be making a unique car. Hood logo can always be removed later if you don't like it. I've always like the green and tan color combo.

btw every time I see those Pontiac seat headrests, it looks like ET is sitting in car.

You are an attention ***** already with convertible. Why not go all the way

BAHAHA I guess you're right!

And yeah those seats do look a little like that, I guess I outta be careful since I have them out of the car now and sitting on my garage floor. If I walk in when its dark and see their silhouettes I might crap myself LOL.

Re: big hood bird = attention *****?!

Personally, I'd leave it off. I just don't think it flows with the raked classy lines of the 91-92 cars. If it were a 90 I'd say go for it. As long as you use the correct vintage turkey decal it wouldn't look too hokey. What really cracks me up is seeing a 4th gen with thirdgen sail panel birds, or a 3rd gen with a huge 2nd gen hood turkey.

Re: big hood bird = attention *****?!

You GOT to get the screaming chicken on there! If I had the money I would.
You should also think about some gold pin stripes like the SE trans ams I always thought that the later TA verts looks alot like the lotus esprit and I thought that some stripping like this would look good.

I am really not a big fan of pin striping but that's up to you. About the hood bird, I say, if you dig it, go for it. I had it on my hood before I went with the ram air hood

I would go as close to the vents as possible, though. My car had it installed too high, imo.

Dittos on the Bird!! Looks great IMO!!

I did see a very beat up version of your car in a parking lot the other day. All different shades of black primer and flat black paint.. Definitely a work in progress but it still looked awesome!!

The green will look good but black is just nasty on these cars.

We went a slightly different route with my wife's 88 GTA. We had a connection at Phoenix graphics do the decal as a stencil and then ghosted the bird onto the hood during a repaint. Very subtle. Some people don't notice it at first but everyone loves it after they notice it.

I LOVE that ghosted hood bird! I was thinking of Ghosting mine also, but decided to go black instead. It's a good bit smaller since I have it on a bulge hood. I had a stencil made by a local vinyl shop after I supplied them with the image (actually, i created the geometry in autocad from an image file and added my own custom touch with the flame).

That ghosted bird looks pretty cool! So yeah at this point it looks like I'm getting the bird no doubt.

And anybody know of any good places that sell the decals?

PHoenix Graphics.

http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/transam/8586ta.htm

The large hood bird is $139 and appears to be available in 5 colors.

Yeah, they've also got a terrible reputation and they cut their decals out of sign vinyl.

When you see a Firebird with absolutely terrible graphics, you can usually trace the source of the decals back to ebay and autografics.

I like the graphics on 3 gen cars. When they are in good shape the car draws attention anyway. Most people expect to see a bird on the hood. It's your car if you like it GO FOR IT. If not thats cool too.

If you get the base firebird hood without the hood vents then you could install a hood bird from the 70s firebirds. Base hood doesn't come with the stick-on shaker.

I'd love one of those but not the fake shaker LOL. But I already bought a used t/a hood since the original has dents in it. Do you think it'll look bad on top of the vents with pieces cut out for the holes?

That's a Bandit II, and a prime example of how stupid the 70's hood turkey looks on the wrong generation car. The stick on shaker is equally stupid, but hey some people like them.

The thirdgen style fits perfectly on the T/A hoods, since it was a factory option.

I don't think the Bandit II cars look bad at all. I think they look great for the theme they have...

You see a Bandit II and you like the look. I see a Bandit II and I see a nothing base model Firebird with a cheesy set of aftermarket wheels and ground effects, a stick on hood shaker, silly emblems, and so on. From my perspective it's a car trying very hard to be something it's not.

Well wasn't the original 77 bandit Trans Am virtually the same thing except for its real shaker? I like the bandit look on any Firebird, except for the fake shakers/scoops, but I think that about any car.

A 77 shaker is a fake piece too..yeah it shakes but for the rest it does nothing. 72 is the last year for a functional shaker with a cold air door. So...if you want to argue fake and not fake.......

Re: big hood bird = attention *****?!

I can sell you an real shaker if you want one. I bought it to put on an S-10 with a v8 but the engine set back too far for the big air cleaner to work. I would have had to cut the cowl out of the truck!LOL So now I have it and no need for it. I have seen them on a third and 4th gen. When they are done right they can look good

Oh yeah man go for it! I've got the gold pinstripe on my GTA and let me tell you it sets it apart. Add 1 big screaming chicken to the mix and you will have a BEAUTIFUL vert.

I've never really been a fan of the GenIII/GenIV style bird emblems. The GenII emblems are my favorite by far and I think it'd look pretty hot using one of those. There is a fella on here with a black Trans AM that put gold GenII style birds on the sail panels and it looks good. I bet it'd look just as good on the hood.

I agree, I think any TA has the right for a Big Bird but I really dislike the 3rd gen above were the bird is small....It just not look right, But i understand the Vent issue, But i would take the time to cut the sticker in to the vents...

Re: big hood bird = attention *****?!

I thought about putting a bird on the hood of mine, but it just doesn't look right to me.
It doesn't flow with the body lines and overall design of the third gen.
The factory optioned outlined bird looks hokey, to me.
Especially when you compare it to the second gen's birds.
The vents should not have a bird going through them, it would take away from the bird itself.

That ghosted bird looked awesome! Very subtle, yet noticable.

It is your car, do what you think is best.
You are painting it in the spring? Pay the $80 and put it on.
Or you could get it done in vynil, if you do not like it peel it off.

When considering the coast of a paint job now-a-days,
$160 (2 decals) is not a lot to get it done the way you want it

The large hood bird is $139 and appears to be available in 5 colors.
That is exactly how I want my car to look. Except with wetter looking paint.

Re: big hood bird = attention *****?!

I say DO IT! Not enough Firebirds with the chicken anymore.
My parents bought me a big gold hood bird for my birthday this winter and I can't wait to put it on. My cars the same dark green color as your's 70'sfan so we'll see who gets theirs on first if you decide to do it. I'm gearing up for a original color repaint over spring break so you might get it on first.

Do it! I'm buying a new hood for my 'bird and fully intend on painting a bird on the stock hood while it's off.
