How do I paint stripes?
Ok, I plan on painting my car this summer by myself. The flat black job it has on it now was done by me with spray cans in my driveway! I sanded to metal, primed and painted section by section. Not bad huh? My dad has a compressor, garage and all the equipment I need to do it. I want to paint it gloss black with silver stripes but I dont know how to do the stripes. Would I spray the black all over first, then wait for that to dry, tape off the stripes, paint the silver over the black, dry, then clearcoat over it all? I am going to sand it all down again, Bondo any little imperfections and dents, re primer it, and paint it with acrylic eurethane paint and clear coat. I really have no idea what process to take for the stripes but any input would help, especially from the pros! Here is a concept pic I did using Microsoft Paint program. Its kind of ghetto but it gets the picture across.

I'm not a pro - but I've been doing a lot of research as of late for my own project and you are spot on the process... Top coat the entire car in black, let dry, tape off stripes and cover the rest in plastic to prevent overspray, allow to dry and apply clear coat... It is that easy!

Re: How do I paint stripes?
The way I did mine (viper blue/GM white stripes) was just the opposite. I sprayed the center of the car white, not the complete car. I then masked off the stripe and spayed the blue. I then umasked the car, ran a tack cloth over it and spayed the clear. Its easier to mask off the stipe than the whole car.
You can do it either way, just make sure your tape is laid down good or it will bleed under it. Oh yeah, you can also sand before the clear to keep from having a tape edge.
Pics are in my sig.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
The guy that did my car went about it in an interesting way. Since he stripped the car he decided to spray the whole thing black. He said it looked pretty good actually. Then he taped off the stripes and headlight buckets and then sprayed red. It turned out great!

Of course the cost of paint increases by doing it this way. But it means I got a coat of black, a coat of red, and then the clear.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
painting the stripes first?!?!? thats genius!!!! i should have thought of that. Well thanks for the advice!!!! i think that would definately be best and easiest.
oh and thanks for the compliment stroker_ss! Ive been wanting to paint my car like that for nine years! now it will finally come to pass. the best part of that is i get to do it by myself!

Re: How do I paint stripes?
Ya bluegrass has it right, i work in a paint and body shop for building ambulances called Life-Line Emergency Vehicles and my job requires me to take measurements on the unit and put exactly wat the customer wants on it for stripes, its all custom hand work done by me and a few co-workers. Anyways if you really wanna hide your paint lines under clear spray your stripes 1st, then your car color and clear over everything, remember to take all important steps very carefuly from prep wiping (we use all dupont stuff) to your final tack process, make sure all your tape is stuck down for masking as overspray can cause serious problems when your done, AND TAKE YOUR TIME!!! don't be in a rush. If i may make a suggestion for another camaro fan???? Find someone who is good with a airbrush and get some sweet ghost flames inside your stripes!!! I'm trying to paint mine this summer, gonna be metalic silver with black racing stripes, silver ghost flames inside my stripes, and a 3 color trim stripe around the bottom of the car.................all under clear coat.....o btw, i'd sand and buff your lines out, use 2000 grit wet and a air buffer. it'll look way sweet

Re: How do I paint stripes?
I would suggest against the different color ground fx.... never really been a fan of that anyway. Makes them look like what they are - plastic bolt ons to the car.
I definitely like your idea of stripes on the hood integrated into that scoop. Looks very, very good to me. Very reminiscent of stock, but unique. Very tasteful.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
Im glad you like it man. I cant wait to actually start it but it may be a while. Anyway, I like the silver for the gfx because alot of them had that stock except that they had the transition stripes. I kind of want to slightly keep that look but also give it more modern edge, hence the lack of the transition stripes. but when its all done, its going to have chrome wheels, chrome door handles, and it already has all the white or clear lamps and side markers so I think it will accent it quite well. also Im going with red emblems all around and red accents like the CID on the hood and red brake calipers so, I think the red emblems stand out with a little more BAM! on the silver than they do on the black.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
Lol that hood paint scheme looks REALLY fimiliar. I ended up not putting the stripes on my car for now, just because of time wise and because the fact that my hood was extremly wavy, I smoothed it out a lot but I still want to make it perfect then I will put the stripes on. But my goal for now is to get it all back together by the end of thanksgiving break so I can bring it up to school and whoop up on all these rice patties driven around the parkin lot thinkin they are fast.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
Nm Im gettin my car back on the road next week, its been over a year. I had the same idea but I broke out the crayons for mine lol. Found someone that had an blank outline and just filled it in kinda rough so dont go to harsh on me.

I will probably repaint it this summer with the black since i want to redo the body work on my hood and make it look like a steel one.
Idk if you have seen it yet but here is the video of my car with the new engine installed and open headers.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
Wish you were closer bro Ild def help you get this thing looking good. Can't wait to see it!
Re: How do I paint stripes?
One thing I see at shows alot is a repaint with two colors and no transition. I see it on trucks and old muscle cars. The best look on any car with 2 different colors is a transition stripe of some sort. It WILL look like a cheap repaint or cheap plastic stuck on the car without it. A red or orange 1 inch strip might look cool.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
I also think that your going to need a pin stripe of some sort. If left without it I think it will end up looking cheap or rushed. I'm actually facing the same dilemma I'm going with a full two tone, black on top with a dark metallic teal on bottom. I know I'll need a stripe but I can decide if I should just drop the black a quarter of an inch, as in black color top quarter in teal quarter inch black then teal bottom, my other option is to use a thin stripe of a contrasting color, but I can't seem to decide on a color or Wich method would look nicer. Sorry to hijack your post a little. Your scheme is going to look killer if done right!

Re: How do I paint stripes?
ya but mine will not be what is considered "two tone" its just black with silver gfx and silver stripes. I dont think a transition stripe is necessary on racing "stripes" I dont think I have ever seen a car with racing stripes and a different color all together on the outside of the stripes. Only thing I have seen is a very small thin line of the same color about 1/8 of an inch away from the racing stripes. Mine will not need that.
I do agree that a transition stripe looks god on a true twotone car like the black and silver one above. But I dont think they are necessary on a car with stripes.

Re: How do I paint stripes?
The reason for a transition stripe is that once you pull your tape off from your second color, you rarely end up with a perfect edge between your colors. the transition stripe covers that. Good luck!
