Re: is black the most sinister.

I love black as well but ever since I saw a muscle car in GTA4 with a metallic black/red paint, I wanted something similar.

Check out this Chevelle. I think that looks pretty slick and sinister

I like black. Although my camaro's hugger orange, the next one will be black, and when I get a truck, it will be black.

Re: is black the most sinister.

Hmmmm...

I think black is the SEXIEST color for a thirdgen. Especially the TA's, but Im bias on that due to my old car. The lines and stance just lends itself very well to black.

For sinister. I like either straight up matte black, or a very dark charcoal metallic. Matte black just says "forget paint..my money is elsewhere" haha. Which is why mine's probably going to end up matte black soon.

I dig Stage20's dark grey metallic with the gold wheels. That thing just looks like it means business.

I have to agree with ghettocruiser. Flat/Matte black is the more sinister looking color. Gloss black is great, but to me at least, its more "pretty-boy/sexy" than what I would consider sinister. Then again, maybe its just me?

Flat black always looks cheap and unfinished to me. I always think to myself: "Wow all that guy could afford was a couple rattle cans of Rustoleum."

A friend of mine did do a semi gloss, to emulate primer, but a little kick to it... It looked "not so cheap", but nice n different....

Sorry to hear that you have such a narrow-minded, misunderstanding of paint.

There is a big difference between flat black primer & a quality matte black PAINT (not primer).

Uneven flat primer, yes. But a QUALITY, even color, matte black paint? Doesn't look like the owner couldn't afford paint to me. Just looks like they chose to get to what THEY want & defied convention.

Edit: @ Stephen, I LOVE THOSE BIG FRONT GRILLS. NUM YUMMERS

Black of course is the most Sinister looking paint, but the car has to look the part as well. Ex: Black VW Bugs don't look Sinister. So to be Sinister you have to have a car that can pull it off, like girls with short hair, some can pull it off, most can't.

Now only to figure out how to flat the windows and lighting systems of the car without hampering light emittance or possibility to see out the window.

Looks OK. I don't like the no hood look. The paint looks even and not too bad. It looks almost like a semi-gloss.

That looks like a good primer job at best.

You really have to see a matte black paint job up close to appreciate it. Local guy has a matte black Z06 and its amazing. Definately not a primered look

Re: is black the most sinister.

and the title says black refering to sinister. then you say black is mean. I thinl black is sinister yes but i think any color can be mean. Depends on the stance and setup. The 2nd gen with the huge motor, if it were hot pink it would look mean not sinister. If its sinister i think everything should be black like wheels windows . Heck even old rat rods with rust look sinister. But on a third gen? I think it all depends on stance WITH COLOR

I guess most of the black matte jobs I've seen were fairly aweful. I did see a matte black 1969 GTO which I liked very much, but I'd have done it in Gloss black if it were me. As far as sinister goes, I think black is the only color that pulls it off. However an aggressive look for a car has less to do with color and more to do with stance and options. Things like the wheels, tires, condition, window tint, decals, hood, etc. all add or detract from that "aggressive" appearance. Some cars, even ones here on the forums are just goofy looking rather than sinister or aggressive.

Alot of red cars usually look good. 91-92 camaros look great when red. I guess most fbodys look pretty good red. You can have a pretty mean/sinister looking red car.

Re: is black the most sinister.

I have to agree with 87WS6. Most flat black cars look cheap. It's an opinion. Trying to dissuade someone against an opinion is absurd.
Orr89rocz the image you posted is of a cool car and it does look good in that color, but I can tell it's been photoshopped to enhance it or it is 100% computer generated.
I have yet to see a flat black car that looked good. I have seen a Ducati that looked awesome in flat black.
The issue I have with the whole idea of it is it's boring. A flat black hides lines of the car. And it does look cheap most of the time. having an understanding of paint has nothing to do with asthetics. Some people think poop on a plate is art, I still call it crap.

I wish people would stop espousing their OPINION as facts. I don't care if it's MATTE black or FLAT black they both look cheap to me on most vehicles.

I also think vehicles that are completely blacked out are ugly too. Oh noes I have an opinion I suggest before you start telling people to educate themselves on the differences between colors you educate yourself on the term opinion
  • a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty;
The first three words of the definition are all that is really needed to define the word opinion.

Matte black looks good on older cars with all of the factory chrome intact. It looks tacky on newer plastic bumpered cars with no chrome.

Re: is black the most sinister.

Black is awesome, end of story. I'm really torn between blue and black right now. I have the cash I need to send my IROC to the body shop, but I'm waiting to make a wise decision.

"Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery.
Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death'). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes). In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.
Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. When designing for a gallery of art or photography, you can use a black or gray background to make the other colors stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme."

I'd really love to paint my IROC BMW Jet Black. I've seen a Jet Black Camaro with a set of Torq Thrust 2's. It looks mean. Just my .

Since you took it personal, I'll retort to YOU.....

There is a ACTUAL DIFFERENCE between FLAT & MATTE. People, like YOU, keep pointing out MATTE cars as ugly FLAT cars. That just shows an apparent lack of intelligence on your part.

I could care less what a persons OPINION is. Everybody is well deserving of their OPINIONS. We all have them. Just should get their terminology/names straight, before pointing to something in particular.

If a person doesn't know what their talking about, they certainly can't walk into a store, ask for a particular color, then get upset that it isn't what they wanted. They got what they asked for....Just didn't ask for the right thing.

You certainly took it personal & got bent outta shape Doc, over what? I said nothing a bout YOU. I was only referring to the colors. And a person getting frustrated over people calling "dark blue as dark green".....Same difference. Flat Black is not Matte Black & Matte Black is not Flat Black.

I do know the difference between the two. The Matte black looks like semi-glossy paint while the flat black usually looks like a shitty primer job. I know the technical difference. I don't care for how either looks in general, but the matte black does look good here in some of the examples.

Again I was just expressing my opinion on the subject. Nothing more.

I have to agree with what other people said. I don't like anything that's not super glossy. To me the car just doesn't look finished without that mirror like shine. Flat/matte is a love it or absolutely hate it kind of thing.

Now only to figure out how to flat the windows and lighting systems of the car without hampering light emittance or possibility to see out the window.[/quote]

i'm not sure how it would look on the windows, but for clear plastic parts like the tail/marker lights you might be able to use Testor's Dullcote or something similar. Its a clear flat enamel paint used for plastic models, usually military stuff like tanks and planes that don't have a glossy paint scheme in real life.

I'm sorry I don't work for a pigment and titanium dioxide supply company. Oh wait. I do.
Matte and Flat are very oftenly interchanged in terminology. I can tell you several mfgers sell "flat" and "matte" paints that are the same damn thing.
Typically though a flat paint is the least lusterous, then matte is barely preceptively higher, Satin and eggshell is next, then semi-gloss then gloss.
When it comes to Flat vs. Matte. Vs. Satin it really comes down to the quality of the paint used, quality of the painter, and quality and sheen of the clear coat.
Like I said, I have only seen very very few things that were done correctly and thus looked good.
As far as me getting out of shape you clearly stated
I wish people would top forming opinions & telling them....When they don't know the difference between FLAT black & MATTE black.

Go educate yourselves THEN come back in here.

Re: is black the most sinister.

It's been my experience that with your average joe who talk about matte look on their cars is because they don't have or want to flip the coin for a gloss paint job. Most of these jobs I've seen are with rattle cans since you can "get away" with that type of finish and argue you were going for the matte finish when in reality you can't afford a proper paint job.

No insult meant to people who buy proper matte style finishes and spray them as you would any other automotive paint.

That is fine if it is your and other's opinion. The point of this thread isn't to discuss whether or not flat or matte black looks good to you or not. So lets keep on topic instead of arguing about paint
