paint problems.

my cars so close to being done. and i really shouldn't be having this much difficultly with the painting, but i am.

im spraying with a devilbiss hvlp from some cheaper 2gun kit i bought for school.

im getting texture everytime i spray- like orange peel.

i've already primed & sanded and now i need to seal, base, and clear. since these coats count i cant just go for it not knowing why im spraying rough.

i've got a 80 gal 4.7 hp air compressor which ive just been regulating at around 15-30. and i've regulated my gun at 15-25.

i have about a 75 ft air hose.

i know im mixing the paint right. sealer isnt thick so i know it should not be spraying like this.

im listing everything so you guys can get an idea of what im dealing with. maybe one of you can point out the flaw.

im spraying in a make-shift booth in my shed, but no possible contaminents should show up till its dry, yeah? so i don't believe thats the issue.

im using sherwin williams and i worked there for over a year and went to school for this, so not knowing how to solve this is beyond frustrating.

im about to just buy a sata and go from there.

if any of you have an suggestions or have had similar problems, i'd appreciate some help.

thanks!

Re: paint problems.

Im not sure what size tip you have on your gun but It sounds like you need to adjust your gun.Turn your fluid all the way in and count 2 and a 1/2 turns out. That should help. Also make sure you adjust the fan...seems like you got your air pressure right. If none of this helps then you could just be too close and the material doesnt have enough time to atomize.
And its not your gun! I use both a Sata and a Devilbiss at work....the Sata is a "shop gun" so when the other painter is using it I rely on my Devilbiss for everything.

I hope this helps!!! Let us know how you make out!!! :-D

Re: paint problems.

thanks, that does help. im using a 1.3... which should be okay for sealer, base, and clear?? i think my guns just dirty... which seems impossible becauase i cleaned it inside and out. i tried my 1.8 tip & needle(never used) and got a much better spray & layout.

i wont lie, didn't treat this gun amazingly... so maybe it's time for a new one.

another question though, just out of curiousity, 1.8 okay for sealer/base/clear?

thanks again. & i'll try your suggestions.

Re: paint problems.

I use a 1.4 for my sealer,base and clear...a 1.8 is kinda big.. primer guns is a 1.8-2.0

Re: paint problems.

That is an awfully long air hose. Do you have a press. gauge at the gun ? If it is possible...I would get a new shorter hose.

You can see the orange peel on all new cars and the mfgs. have spent millions on their paint systems. It's almost impossible to spray with any equipment and not get some orange peel. Spray enough coats of clear and color sand it. It will look like a mirror.

^x2. Do you have any inline filters to keep water out? Also a wetsand and buff on the final product does wonders. Just make sure to give the paint a little time to cure before wetsanding and buffing a lot.
