I am going to be painting my car next summer (Hopefully! I've been saying it for a while now!)

Anyways, I am getting rid of the antenna and the mount. I just want a smooth surface, I dont want to leave the mount there. Besides, I NEVER listen to radio! Its always CD's or IPOD for me.

So what are some suggestions on how to get rid of this? I cant get to it from the inside. Does it screw off??? Can I grind it down??? What do I do?

Any advice helps guys. Thanks.

 

Yes. You can purchase an antenna wrench as seen below or improvise: I used a small punch and hammer to loosen it.

Ok cool. I used a pair of pliers and it came unscrewed easy enough.

But the screw is still sticking up through the hole and it seems pretty attached.
How do I take this thing off?

Also, what are some recommendations on how to close up this hole and just have a smooth fender???

Remove the black plastic in the wheel well and you'll see how the mast is attached.

There's one or two (can't remember) screws holding the thing in place. The trickiest part will be pulling the antenna wire out unless you just cut it off and leave it there (not recommended). As for the hole left behind, cut out a piece of sheet metal the same shape and weld it in, then grind down the weld beads and smooth the area with glazing putty. Simple! Only took me about 2 hours and it was my first attempt at wire-feed welding.

I think you are supposed to remove all the hardware mentioned above, but kept nice and in re-usable condition. Then you remove the wire from the radio to the antenna through the chassis wall and keep the seal bung in good condition...lastly, you box it up and send it to a fellow thirdgener like me. :-)

I really want an antenna, I am old and listen to talk radio, please help!

Ive shaved the antenna twice on my car, before and after the new fender. I took the same route as evilcartmen did but instead of welding i just made a big enough piece and panel bonded it to the rear then put some panel bond on top, after it was in place and i cut off the stud, then sanded it down and put on minimal filler. Then I ran a hidden antenna up my A pillar and above my rearview mirror incase I want to listen to some local channels.

 

I have heard of folks just keeping the assembly in the interior of the car. Actually ran the line back into the car and keeping it all under the dash. the stock antenna is fished in against the firewall on the inside and the screwed back onto the assembly. Heard it works ok. Better then nothing at all and it fits and costs nada

 

I used one of those hidden antennas for motorcycles. It's a little bigger than a pack of gum and can easily be stowed anywhere.

 

I too took the same route and went with a hidden antenna.
