Issues with headlight motor

I've rebuilt my passenger headlight motor and it now seems to run too far. It will open with the switch and come all the way up but will bind at the top and won't come down with the switch. If I go under the hood and crank the dial to loosen it up then it will drop. Seems to just to be running to hard. Don't know if there is some adjustment on the motor(other than the white screw on the back of the headlight lid.)

Thanks, this is driving me nuts and I hate wasting time on something that doesn't make my car faster.

Re: Issues with headlight motor

You'll need to open it again. What has happened, there is a small ball bearing on the end of the wormdrive shaft. If that ball bearing is missing or is not captured by the stub-shaft on the opposite sideof the motor, then the wormdrive shaft can climb the gear causing it to go off-center and jamb. Once you've verified the ball bearing it still in place (use a dab of grease to hold it in the cup on the end of the wormdrive shaft), then loosen the sheet metal jamb nut on the stub shaft, use a flat blade screwdriver to turn the stub shaft in just enough until you feel a little resistance, then tighten the jamb nut.

Thanks Lon. I actually tried calling you as I heard you're the resident expert. So i undo the end screw on the motor itself and look for the ball? I will check it tonightvwhen I come home from work.

Thanks

Re: Issues with headlight motor

More like you take the top of the motor, where the emergency **** is, off, and you check to make sure that the bearings are in the right spot. Should be between 2 thin washers, which are between a clip on the shaft and the bushing in the magnet housing, with the shiny sides facing the bearing.

And, if everything is in the right spot, then you take the motor off or get under the car and adjust the bearing preload screw at the bottom of the motor.

Re: Issues with headlight motor

Follow the instructions I provided in the kit for removing the motor from the actuator housing again including how to hold the brushes retracted while you reassemble it.

Re: Issues with headlight motor

I've taken it apart and the bushings are where they should be and in tact. The beAring preloaded screw....if I tighten it then it will make it harder or easier on the motor? Basically which way do I need to turn it for ny application?

Re: Issues with headlight motor

You'll only lightly tighten it to pre-load the bearing so it remains supported by the cup of both shafts.
