paint code

Hi,
I got my '83 Camaro two months ago, and I need to take care of some rusty spots, so I would like to get the original color. She is dark grey, but I cannot find the paint code anywhere (checked the glove box, under the hood, inside the doors...). I went to 2 Chevy shops and the only number I got from the people there is 82U, but they said I have to get the 4digit code.
Does anyone know, how to find the paint code?
Thanks a lot.

Re: paint code

'83, did not use the 4 digit code yet, but code 82 would be Midnight Sand Gray Poly. PPG# 3536 for enamel paint and #3537 for water-based.

Now, that very same color is listed for '84 when GM started the 4-digit "WA" paint codes. They are WA 8322 for enamel and WA 7714 for water-based. The PPG #'s are the same.

Re: paint code

According to this site 82 is WA8322.

Any automotive paint store should have been able to look it up with the make, model, year and code 82. I'm not sure if there was a part code label inside your car in 83 but there may be a stamped metal tag on the core support with the code.

Re: paint code

The metal tag on the core support will have the 2-digit code on it. WA8322 would only be the correct code if the car was originally painted with enamel based. WA7714 was the code for the water-based cars.

Please note, there is a noticeable difference in color between the WA8322 and WA 7714 codes, even though the color has the same name and 2-digit code. Also, the metal tag should also state "enamel" or "water" right on it.

Re: paint code

ok, checked the core support. It says 82L 82U W
I guess that means water-based!?
So WA7714... I let the people in the paint store take a look at it.
Good night

Yeah, that should be water-based.

Re: paint code

Gini, the sticker on my 84 was on the inside of my console lid. If someone has replaced it, well . . . it don't come off too good.
