Best hood choice for a carb setup?

Im looking for a new hood for my car, i recently swaped out my 305 for a carbed 350 and im using one of those heart shaped air filters because of the clearance issues.

Im thinking about going with either a 2' cowl or daytona hood.

Could the daytona hood be made functional? and does it give me anymore clearance than the stock hood?

Im leaning more towards the daytona hood but i like the that the cowl hood actually gives me some performance.

What happens with the cowl hood when it rains? does rain get in through the back of it? or does it close off?

Thanks for the info.

Rain shouldn't get into the cowl unless you driving backwards at 60 mph. Some cowls are completely open in the back and some have perforated steel covering the opening. Either way it shouldnt be a probelm.

I'm running a carbed 350 with a drop-base air cleaner and there are no clearance issues; could be, however, that your manifold is the problem. Anyway, should you wish to see a pic, click on my vbGarge (garage-shaped icon next to my online status).

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

i would go with a cowl...i had a lift off cowl on one of mine....the only thing you have to worry about is snow getting in there, but if you cover it in the winter its no big deal, rain won't get in there

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

@84z28 lol yeah im mostly worried about the big puddles around here.. Here in houston it gets flooded all the time and i dont want some random guy to splash me water through the cowl.

@james My set up is probably at around the same height as yours im running an edelbrock performer. Which air cleaner is that? It seems like it will fit pretty snug. I just didnt want to end up buying one at my local parts store and end up returning it.

@86T/A yeah snow isnt a problem where i live

Thanks for the info guys, does anyone know anything about the daytona hood?

14 x 3" air filter with (IIRC) a 1/2" dropped base. The cost differential between a dropped base and a hood would be considerable (if the drop base will work, of course). I was content to find th above solution because I like the 'sleeper' look and cowl hood just wasn't going to do the trick for me.

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

I currently have an Edelbrock performer intake, Holley Carb, and an edelbrock 14x3" drop base air cleaner and it fits fine under my Trans Am's factory hood, which has less hood clearance than your camaro. You should be fine with one of those. I actually removed one of those triangles of death from my motor to use this cleaner, I don't trust the foam they have..

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

the vette L88 should be the lowest air cleaner on the market for a 14x3 but no reason at all with that performer intake you can't fit an air filter under a stock hood

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

i vote the cowl over the daytone hood. that thing is fugly.

as for rain, rain will get into a cowl hood, since the airflow over the cowl will go into the opening, the rain water off the hood will follow. It does it on my car when i get stuck in the rain. Never had it cause a problem though, but im sure if you hit a big puddle, you could have an issue.

but as people have said, with the right cleaner, you can probably fit this all under a stock hood.

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

If interested, I'm running a Spectre 9in chrome air cleaner (didn't like the 14in touching the distributor), and I'm running a 2" filter in it. I get plenty of flow, since it's a straight 2in all the way around (as opposed to the drop-base), and this filter comes with a oil-charged reuseable cleanable filter. It's been great, and fits under my stock hood with Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and Edelbrock 1406 carb. No clearance issues even with the hood liner still in, and no issues with linkage or choke or dist wires (since it's only 9" and not drop base). Usually on the shelf at Autozone for $30 - here's the link on Summit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SPE-47708/

Re: Best hood choice for a carb setup?

I have a ss hood also, and running a 1" carb spacer puts the air cleaner directly level with the scoop opening.I have a block plate that I carry in case I get caught in the rain. The air flow is still ok with the scoop blocked off.I rarely drive it in the rain,as it's not my dd.

Hey alicat , I noticed you're from Tasmania! I visited Hobart years ago while I was in the Navy...I remember the people were nice and the place was awesome! (So were the bottle shops lol)! Also spotted a few 55-57 Belair Hot Rods around...

Hey I created a new thread about ways of keepin water out of our hoods, if you could post up your block off plate it would be great!

Thanks
