Fiberglass Blister,fixable?

I Just bought an Original Notchback and it has the Blisters Issue. I was wondering if there is a permanent fix for it. I Know they said to sand and repaint but is there anything to FIX it right?
The car was red but was painted white at some point so my other questions are,
Do i have to sand till i see red?
What grit do i need to start with? Any difference of grit to sand the bumpers and the hatch? Also if you can please tell me what grit to start with and end with?
Car has no rust at all, its been a texas car all its life so i dont want to take it to bare metal. Thanks in advance!!!

Blister in the paint? Could be the part was not properly prepped and the release agent caused the blister. If that is the case it would need to be taken all the way down to the fiberglass of SMC (which ever its made of). Either way the blister has to be taken down to where its begining from.

yeah, its the original Notchback and i read an article that the paint bubble and that GM just said to sand it and repaint. I was wondering if there was something else that can be apply so it wont come back.

Re: Fiberglass Blister,fixable?

If that is the case then it sounds as if its a blister due to a release agent residue.
Sand and prep it properly. If you're doing this yourself, when you go to the paint store ask them for a cleaner used for plastics/SMC/fiberglass. The reason for that is the harsher wax and grease removers can soak into the material and also cause these problems later on.

I would sand it with 180 on a DA then when you have the imperfection feather edege then move on to 320 grit on a DA and prime with a good 2K primer if it has been resprayed white then there is a good chance that your problem may be with white good luck

Re: Fiberglass Blister,fixable?

Be damn careful sanding it. You go through to the hatch material you can easily dig into it making a kind of dent in it. Worse than an A$$hole in the paint.

Thanks for the advice, will it better (safer) to sand it by hand? I really dont want to screw something up.

If you sand by hand, I'd use a block or something to prevent you digging with your fingers. Personally I'd sand it with 80 on a DA carefully to get almost to the bottom of what is lifting. Then go to 180 and prime. Block with 180 till it's straight and smooth then another lighter coat or two of primer.

Re: Fiberglass Blister,fixable?

Just depends on your skill level. If you're going to use a DA don't have it opened up wide running with a high pitch scream like a lot of guys do. You could even start off with a DA to knock out a lot of it and finish with a block.
