Bulb Issue

I just replaced the bulb so when you open the hood it lights to show some light in engine bay. Well i left it in over night while charging the battery with the hood up. Did i blow the bulb because i took it out and tested it and looked and the sprial coil in it. It's not broke.

I should just replace it not that big of a deal but would like to know why it would do that within 12 hours.

Re: Bulb Issue

could have just been a crappy new bulb. did you test it? was there continuity between the two leads through the filament? Some types of bulbs you re not suypposed to touch the glass with your fingers because the oil from your hands will cause the bulb to fail prematurely

also, i didnt know 3rd gens had under hood bulbs? none of mine do. or is this a camaro thing?

Re: Bulb Issue

My 1992 Camaro RS had an underhood light, so did my 1990 RS. I yanked that dim little sucker out though - replaced with 2 of the SMD flexible strip LED's and a switch, and mounted that under the hood. When I turn on the LED's, the entire engine bay is lit and brightly, and since the LED stripos are tucked just behind the small lip in the front of the hood, the light is dispersed from the hood down - meaning NO SHADOWS. It's great!

I like that idea!
I suppose a person could get one of those trailering light bulbs that have the wires coming from it and place that in the socket so you can use the wires to power your strips when you open the hood. Or just solder a wire to the pin in the socket.

Pics of it????

Re: Bulb Issue

Oh and to the OP,
make sure the light bracket is tight as that is the ground. Also make sure its not bent down too far. I think they work in the same way as they did hundreds of years ago....
There is a bit of mercury in the socket and it makes the contact when the hood is open. If the light is bent down a bit the mercury may not be making the contact needed.

The correct bulb is a 93.

Don't use an 1156 bulb. It's way brighter than a 93, but leave the hood open for 15-20 minutes and the bulb will fry itself. Don't ask me how I know this.

Re: Bulb Issue

Yes, I used my stock wiring. The OEM underhood light has 12v+ always, and the mercury connects the ground. I just removed the OEM socket altogether, and used the 12v+ wire, extended, routed through the hood (betwen hood and the hood braces), and I used a simple pull on/push off switch on the underside of the hood close to where the latch is.

I'll try to get some pics in a couple days - it's raining here now.

Re: Bulb Issue

OK - sorry took me so long to get pics. You can see that the LED strips just kinda tuck behind the edge of a 'bump' in the stock hood - thus they don't shine in your eyes but rather back towards the engine. Nothing special holding them there - just the sticky adhesive strip that's on them - I just really cleaned the area well so they'd stick good. Been on a year now with no issues. In 2nd pic, you can see the push/pull switch I used circled - there's already a perfect sized hole in the hood at that location, no need to even drill. Factory underhood light only gets a 12v+ single wire - think I just ran the ground wire from the switch to a hood latch bolt. Theyare pretty bright at night - lights up the whole bay. Can't see things like starter wires that are under the motor, but great for a simple look or at a nightly cruise-in.

Re: Bulb Issue

I kinda already told ya above, but ...

Stock hood with a light has one wire, 12v+, runs up the pass hood strut. This wire has 12v+ at all times. I extended that wire, pulled it between the hood and it's bracing with a coat hanger to get it to the front of the hood. Attach the positive leads from the lights to one side of the switch, and the hood wire to other side. Attach the grounds from the lights to the hood.

Lights available at Advance, $15 for 2 flexible strips that are 12in each. If you can wait 30 days for a 'slow boat from China' - you can get them on ebay for about $4 - just search "flexible SMD LED".
