87 t-top conversion to convertible

I have a 1987 Iroc that is a t-top car and is solid. I also have a 1992 RS convertible that the whole underside is rotted out. I want to make the 87 into a convertible using any and everything from the 92. Has anyone done this??? Any help would be great. Thanks....

I am not sure that anyone has but DONT!!! Dont butcher up a perfectly good Iroc!!! I recommend if you want a convertible you should pick up a solid RS roller for cheap and chop the top on that. That is if you have a drivetrain in the 92 RS otherwise pick up an RS with a decent motor unless all you car about is looks.

Yeah if the IROC is solid I would leave it alone and sell it to someone, I'm sure you could get a decent price for it since it's solid. I don't know how much body experience you have but I would just look at fixing the RS if I were you.

I don't think it would be easy, but my guess is that it would be possible.

After all, convertibles started life as t top cars, and you do have all the parts for the conversion.

Dont kill an Iroc. Find a less desirable car to do that to. Good luck!

Like I said go for a solid sport coupe or RS. eseibel67 dont give him any ideas! lol No, really dont do it you will regret it later. You never know these Irocs could one day sell on Mecum for $40,000+! So take a sport coupe or Rs but judging by the fact you wanted to do it to a Iroc I'm guessing you like the looks of the RS better. Just search craigslist until you find a solid one.

Re: 87 t-top conversion to convertible

If the '92 is shot anyway, I'd take it apart taking lots of pictures of how everything goes together and bagging/labeling everything. When you get it all cleaned out you should be able to see what was done to make it a convertible and if its something you can do. If you can, good for you and you've already got a good start on it. If you can't, you can put the '92 back together and sell it, drive it as is, or part it out.

Re: 87 t-top conversion to convertible

Hey guys, thanks for the intrest in my post. Kinda new to this message board stuff, so thanks for the replies. Years ago I had a 87 convertible sport with the carb 305 motor. I loved the car but I got married and the family began and it was time to get rid of the sports car. I have alway been into cars and have done some extensive body / paint work for a hobby. A few years ago I got a 70 nova that i put together painted candy apple red and silver and it looked sharp but i just wasn't like my old camaro. Last year I found this RS conver local and bought it CHEAP. I knew it needed floor work but wasn't possitive how bad the floorpans were till i got the interior out. Then I came across this 87 IROC 350 tpi with disc brake rear and I bought the car just for the drive train. Now The intresting part is that i found a 45 page ASC manual that showed the proccess that they used to make t-top cars into convertibles. I think i just want to take on the challange of the job. I just wish I could find someone that actuall did one. Still have some time to think it over so keep up the feedback... If it does go I'll take plenty of pics. TKS

beaner: Your opening post gave the impression that you were a drunk guy with a sawzall, BUT...

You have body experience. AND you have the 45 page ASC conversion manual.

Do it! Write the book and be the hero!
