Should I change colors?

Oh man... today I got this in the mail

http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/kirk...s-p-12659.aspx

Kirker has some colors that blow me away. I see something like this, and I'm like a kid in a candy store.

Somebody talk me out of changing the color of my car! I know what an incredible pain it is compared to just spraying the outside

here's my car now. I don't even know what I would want to change to, but it would be something that would look good with a grey interior

The overall package (of your car) has an understated elegance that would be difficult to match, IMO. I say leave it.

I've seen some resprays that are horrific simply because they're incomplete: engine bay, door jams, wheel well lips and so on. The ground effects, badges, and so forth were left in place and.... Well, you get the idea.

JamesC

why thank you James. That means a lot

One nice thing about kirker (other than the quality and good price) is that they sell as a prepackaged color the GM medium metallic grey for my car. SCORE

When I do repaint it this summer/fall, i'm going to use a far more subtle stripe on the rockers. the red will still be there, but the black will either be gone or minimized

Re: Should I change colors?

i say leave it the same color. i like the color it is now with the black rims. its just a lot of $$$ changing colors with repainting the jams, engine bay, and so on. i believe you should keep the color the car was born with.

Re: Should I change colors?

I see way too many cars around here that are one color, but the door jambs, scratches, rock chips and things like that show another color underneath. At work someone drives a white Monte Carlo that is maroon under the white paint. I just laugh every time they open the door, or every time I see where the white is peeling.

Changing the color correctly is a crazy amount of work for a car that is in excellent shape. My vote is keep it the same. No need to tear it apart if it looks this good.

Re: Should I change colors?

i had somebody on NTTGA suggest a 2nd gen style RS two tone. Grey on the bottom, black on the top. That would kind of be cool. And it would be wouldn't be as many issues as a normal color change

Re: Should I change colors?

To do it right you'd have to strip it completely, a la Spike-Z. You'd have to strip it to metal, and the truly correct way would be to spray it as a completely, 100% striped shell, including the floor pans under the carpet and even the undercarriage, or at least factory style overspray on the undercarriage. You're looking at thousands of dollars to do this right.

Personally I think your color can look really nice when it's fresh; problem is you never see fresh ones to get an idea of what it looks like in perfect condition. The gray is nice, stick with it IMO. Everyone loves a gray '88 IROC, I don't see why everyone wouldn't love a gray RS.

Re: Should I change colors?

I've always loved the 2 tone camaro's with black on top, Reminds me of a raccoon or a bandit mask, Hydes car pops into mind.

Very curious how it would look on a thirdgen, The 2 tone ending behind the window like on the RS.

If you were going to do that, Id vote for it to be as monochromatic as possible, No bright red or orange pinstripe to break up the 2 tone, maybe a white stripe if anything.

Re: Should I change colors?

I"ll have to say I sorta like it. I'd loose the red stripe over the ground fx though. The hood looks awesome, but I dunno if it looks right where it ends as it goes back, or if it should cover the entire B pillar.

Re: Should I change colors?

the b pillar is tricky.. I tried a couple of different concepts for it, but none of those has the 2nd gen RS feel.

There are a ton of cars out there that extend the two tone all the way to rear of the car. I would rather not go there, just because it's been done already so much

Haven't ruled out the heritage stripes with the repaint, just looking at options

Re: Should I change colors?

A color separator is necessary IMO. A $5000 paint job will look insta-cheap without that transition.

While I think Hyde certainly has the nicest example of that kind of paint job to date by far, given his HOK orange and Lambo black and extremely expensive clear coat, I still don't know that I like the two-tone scheme on our cars. I say pick a color and stick with it.

I also in truth am not a fan of heritage stripes, or any racing stripes on these cars. It's something that again, has been done to death, and unfortunately usually in bad taste. Truthfully I think the heritage stripes don't look all that great.

I like clean, monochrome cars. However a red stripe at the bottom would be good, I would just get a set of the IROC stripes (the later year ones where the two colors are separated) and just use the red from that set.

Re: Should I change colors?

remember, Hyde and I are in the same local club. I can't use that two tone design without everybody everybody thinking I'm trying to clone his, even if it's a different color. If I do it, I'm kind of digging the RS historical tribute concept

So puma, knowing you're not a fan of stripes, I'm going to ask your opinion on stripes... LOL

do you like the wider, custom stripes like on my car the way it is now, or the molded, curved heritage stripes?

I know that if I don't do a two tone, I will put some kind of stripe back

Re: Should I change colors?

i can also add that if I do lose the stripe over the rocker, I'll make the dividing stripe thicker.

the only hard part would be making the sharp turns with tape. I might have to paint them

Re: Should I change colors?

I think if you want to do stripes, something in between what you have now and the heritage stripes is good. The heritage stripes are too curvy, and your current ones are too wide IMO. What I would do, if you want to go with racing stripes, is have the inner edges parallel to the hood crease in the center, and have the outer edges parallel to the hood creases that widen out from the headlight pockets. Make sure to run a pinstripe around the stripes, with a few inches of space between the two main stripes, and I wouldn't go too wide with them, or too narrow. I'd also make sure they stop on the hood a few inches from the leading edge, including the surrounding pinstripe, don't put them on the top of the roof, and stop them on the decklid/spoiler, like the heritage stripes--no bumpers. As for color, a pearl white *may* be possible if the rest of the car just plain "has it". Otherwise gray/silvers are always safe bets, if not a little boring.

Re: Should I change colors?

Mine is 2-Toned a little different ,black top original flame red on bottom. When i first bought it I was not sure I liked it. But it grew on me. So now I just need to decide if I want to keep two tone when I repaint. I will have to learn how to post a large picture, on a bright sunny day and post it.

man stick with the gray, there are so few 3rd gens that are grey and it looks soooooooooooo good.

A nice DEEP metallic grey would be a change, but not nearly as bad as say going to red or something

Try photoshopping a 2in.cowl hood on it. If you want a change that would do it.

Re: Should I change colors?

Personally I'd stick with the gray. If the paint is fading/bad, just repaint.

If you're set on two tone and/or stripes, consider black GFX on an otherwise grey car.

Consider the heritage stripes package in black, maybe change it towards what puma suggested, if you want to repaint the hood and roof.

I remember some photos of your car showing faded paint and a disappeared clearcoat on the hood. I can imagine a repaint, at least of the hood, is desirable. (did you rattlecan-paint the hood at any point? Not sure if that was yours)

Since paintjobs/repaints generally cost quite a bit of money, I would not half-*** it. That means, strip the parts you want to repaint, basecoat them, color, then clear.

Re: Should I change colors?

This is my car now. yes, part of that is rattle can, but I was alrady planning in stripping it all down this summer. If I don't go with the RS historical paint job, I'm going to go with heritage stripes, or something like heritage stripes. I may do a wider stripe that looks like a heritage, but a little beefier. and I will stop them short before they reach the hood lip. These stripes were something I did in lacquer (not rattlecan, real dupont lacquer) as a temorary thing until I did a total repaint. Money isn't really an issue, I've good with paint so I'll be doing all the labor myself between the beginning of may to probably october, when the temps will be cool enough to paint all day without stopping

and the new one

just had another idea...I could use the stripes like in the last photo I made, but go ahead and extend the two tone all the way to the back. that would avoid problem with the B-pillars, still give me a two tone, and I would still have my stripes up front. if I really wanted to be custom I could form the stripes into heritage stripes when the two tone reaches the front of the car. If I did all of that I might not put the red around the black, I might just go with a pinstripe

Re: Should I change colors?

58Mark, I was in Long Island this weekend... and I saw the most awesome color I've ever seen. Looking at the color of YOUR car, and your desire for a color change, this color would work for you.. It's a silver.. but it has a tint to it, seemed a shade or two darker than the "silver" we all know of. Almost thought it was Chevy's "Pewter" color. It was on a brand new Nissan Maxima, check it out. And with Heritage stripes in black, it would look pretty cool IMO

I like the last design best but stop at the rear spoiler. Leave the spoiler grey and that flows best with the body line in my opinion

I wonder if I could terminate the two tone at the back similar to the way I did the front, so there are stripes on both ends?

I could not have said it better myself. My suggestion would be keep the color or find a similar one with more metal flake that would not be a detectable difference in the jams/under the hood. There are some really nice grays out there with lots of metal flake. These cars look fabulous in gray.

Re: Should I change colors?

I don't have a comment on the color schem but I recently found a book by Pat Ganahl called "Paint Your Car on a Budget" who is big on repainting and spotting in cars to make them look like new again. He doesn't get into bodywork in this book hardly at all but looks at helping amatuers do a much better job at home. May be of help.
Remember to take lots of pics and good luck!
