Quarter repair advice
Quarter repair advice
i started sanding the por 15 off of my left and right rear quarters to get the surface rust down to bare metal and primer temporarily while i fix the car up mechanically. while sanding i found a pinhole in the right panel and i'm not sure how to go about repairing it. it elongated slightly when removing the rust from the area. i have a picture. i'm wondering if it can be welded shut? it seems like this area is hollow inside and i don't know if theres a chance that rust has formed inside of the two panels? just trying to see what i'm up against. any advice would be greatly appreciated. if you cant tell by the picture its on the flat part of the lip right above the wheel well.

Re: Quarter repair advice
The only right way do it is to cut out the rust and make a patch to weld in it's place. Usually a square patch with that little bend in it to match the wheelwell lip.

Re: Quarter repair advice
You can try, but the metal will be really thin at that point and it'll probably burn back leaving a much bigger hole.
Re: Quarter repair advice
That makes sense. It crossed my mind but personally I don't weld so I didnt know if that would be a concern. I guess I'll have to see what my welding buddy has to say. Thanks guys

Re: Quarter repair advice
If you want there is a way to cheat. But its the cheap way out. Get a little Upull (very coarse bondo basically) Fill the hole and im sure you get the idea. (Don't yell at me guys I am simply mentioning the cheap way out)
Re: Quarter repair advice
I'm probably just going to fill it with the por15 product porpatch. I'm only gonna have the car a few years at best. If the rust comes back before I want it to, I'll do it right at that point. Can't take welding classes for a few more months. I imagine it would be a costly repair at a shop. The body shop at my work doesn't do restoration type work, strictly collision repair and unfortunately I have no other connections. Thanks for all the input

If you do weld it shut use a copper or brass piece of metal to fill the hole. The metal will not stick to the copper and will be unoticable after grinding. Life changes for the better after getting a welder and YOU TUBE is a great place to get pointers. No matter how many classes you take its one of those things that get better with PRACTICE and experience. Also a welder pays for itself in no time.
