Is a flux welder too hot to use on body panels?
I'm gonna shave the door handles but the body shop wants $150 and thats with the doors off, handles/lock removed and the area sanded to bare metal, plus I'll finish the job with body filler, etc. I have a flux welder that I use for general stuff but I'm worried it will be too hot and warp the surrounding door metal (22 gauge I think).....any thoughts? input?
Thanks
Thanks

I think splatter and flux contamination would be a bigger concern.

I could get around the splatter issue but you do raise a good point with the contamination.....hmmmmm.....maybe JB weld!.....lol

one could spot weld across from eachother untill you went all the way around...like you would tighten bolts on a wheel...id let it cool after a few welds though to help prevent and distortion...my thoughts if thats the route you'd go...or just buy a tig welder.

A flux welder wont be too hot. You just need to weld, let it cool, weld, cool, weld cool. Just weld in spots spaced out or the metal will warp. Patience is the key. I would never consider using a flux core welder. Too much spatter and mess to grind away. Grinding away the extra metal can actually get hotter than welding and cause warpage.

"flux contamination" isn't a problem with good multi pass wire.
will say right on the spool, multi pass

Can you upgrade your welder to use solid wire & gas? MIG is the best way to do a job like this. You can get a small C25 bottle or even straight CO2 & a small spool of wire for less than the body shop wants. Although you'll still need a regulator, etc on top of that

the flux would be a big issue. you would have to grind off all the flux before you could do the next set of welds.
if you do not want to upgrade you welder, you could just use body panel adhesive, it would be just as strong as welding with out the heat, time, or grinding of welding. ether way just remember to use seam-sealer on the inside.
