Hopping wipers?

Every time I use my wipers, on any speed other than hi, they hop across the windshield as if they are dry. Its irritating. Is this a common problem? Any way to loosen the tension on the springs?

I'd try Rain X and some new wipers.

I like bosch wiper blades. I stay away from rain x blades. Rain x are a rip.

Re: Hopping wipers?

I think he was referring to using Rain-X on the windshield, not Rain-X wiper blades. Rain-X is supposedly good stuff, and my parents always nagged on me to use it, though I've no experience with it.

Re: Hopping wipers?

Thats the thing, they are new blades. I also do have rain-x on my windshield. This has always seemed to happen. I bought the beam style blades to see if it helped, but no.

Re: Hopping wipers?

i know its very annoying. even more so when your riding with someone. I wonder if they make some kind of windshield lube to stop this problem.

Re: Hopping wipers?

use a claybar to clean the windshield really well. I have also used SoftScrub on the glass to remove any contaminates in the glass. After that, use some alcohol on the wiper blades to clean any grime from them. That should stop the chatter.

Re: Hopping wipers?

When Rain-X gets old, it tends to make the wipers chatter; at least in my experience. Film or foreign material on the glass will also make the wipers chatter.

To get the glass really clean, run down to the grocery store and get a can of Bon-Ami cleaning powder (it'll be next to the Comet). Make a paste with the Bon-Ami and water and scrub the windshield with the paste using a sponge. Scrub the heck out of it until the water sheets off the glass (no beading).

Re: Hopping wipers?

also, how strong is the spring on your arms? wondering if maybe they've gotten weak over time and not putting proper force on the wipers

Re: Hopping wipers?

Am having problem on passenger side only, skimming the surface more than hopping, with nearly new blades. Will try the Bon-ami trick on glass.

As for the spring, I thought this the other day, but comparatively the passenger side arm is harder to lift up than drivers.... Dumb question, what is correct way to disengage the cover to get to the nut holding the arm on? was thinking of stretching or replacing spring.
thanks,
Gary

Re: Hopping wipers?

To get the arm off the spindle, IIRC you lift the arm away from the glass. Look on the side/top edge of the arm at the spindle. You'll see a little tab that is bent up along the side of the arm. with the arm lifted from the glass, lift the tab parallel with the glass. Release the arm and it should remain away from the glass. You should now be able to wiggle the arm off the spindle.
