Too much rust?

I just acquired an 86 camaro. I knew the floorpans were rusty when I bought it. I just removed the interior carpet and found the exact rust spots.

Driver side front where the left foot sets, there is about a small hole about 3 inches wide. The driver side rear... is bad. where the back passenger would sit there feet... its a hole about the 1 square foot.. and the rust climbs up under the rear seat and there is a hole there also. The passenger side only has a tiny hole and just surface rust..

damn t-tops. Is this even repiarable?

Is it repairable? Yes.

Is it economically repairable? It depends on the sentimental value of the car, or how much you are willing to shell out to put new Pans in it.

The driver side could probably be ground down, and patched. We did that with my friends car and it worked well. Stopped the rust dead, and fixed the tiny hole in the floor.

But if faced with what you describe for the passenger rear footwell, I don't know. If I saw it on my car I'd just part it out and start with something else.

Re: Too much rust?

I have never welded before and know little about body work.
As a temporary fix I was looking at some cheap fixes.
Some people suggested cutting the rust out and weld some steel in place and then put undercoasting over it.
Another method would be to still cut the rust away, but instead use fiberglass and then put undercoating/seam sealer over that. How would these work?

Re: Too much rust?

We used a wire wheel to get clean metal, primed it. then used sheet metal and sheers along with some body glue. When it dried we coated it all. Worked fine.

The only real way is ofcourse to replace the pans, but we coudn't weld and they were small holes in non-structural spots.

He's right. No sense in stressing yourself out over this. I would take it a step further and get more than one opinion as well. As oppossed to a dealership, most auto shop estimates - from my experience - are free.

Body glue..? What kind? What brand name? Where do you go to buy it ? I have 4 quater size rust holes in both my front pans and really looking to do what you did to "patch" them up. Any help is appreciated ..

Don't remember, it wasn't my car so I didn't pay for it. Its basically the same stuff they used in the factory.

Re: Too much rust?

There is no such thing as to much rust, if the car means something to you.

Do SFC first though, then hack away at floors at will.
