That's just a primer for the urethane. You can use the primer or just use a primerless urethane.

you mean the black metal trim that goes all the way around the glass? i just removed mine to repaint it and put it back on it wasnt held on with any adhesive at all. needed a rubber malet to get it back on.

i dont think the adhesive is really needed. i had to give it some nice whacks with a rubber mallet to get it back on. its not comming back off without some prying.

I think they all had adhesive from the factory. The service manual I have is 1985. I don't think they even had primerless urethane then. Some applications of urethane on structual glass and such may still require primer but for trim around the hatch glass I can't see where it would be required or needed.

Good point... i think its more to do with having a prepped surface for it adhere and bond to tho just like paint

That's pretty much how I take it. But I wouldn't want to sand on my glass. Putting urethane on the edge of the glass, where it's not as smooth, would be my choice. Service manual may say something different. Scuffing of paint inside trim may help adhesion also. I also agree, most of them were pretty tight without adhesive. Urethane on edge of glass would also act as cushion IMO. Good luck, be careful.
