How replacing the carpet turned into a new paint job

So my new years resolution was to fix a few interior problems with my camaro since it was just sitting i though i could take my time and it would be simple. The carpet had bad mold due to poor weather stripping, simple solution replace the carpet and weather stripping. Well i had to weld some rust holes in the floor pan and since I had to break out the welder and the car was up on jack stands I thought well no better time than now to build subframe connectors. That is the exact point I got the itch to paint the whole car, I have bad ADD so when i get an idea like that its like christmas. I stripped the whole car down and then realized how much work this was going to be, i told my self its too late to put it back together. Now here I am, my plans are to get the car painted white and paint the GFX black just a little contrast, I am going to install black interior as well. originally the car was red with gray interior. here are some pictures of my progress. I will upload more pictures when i have time.

I understand. I started a simple engine/trans swap and now my interior is gutted lol. Was gonna do carpet.... now its rust patching, carpet, seats, headliner, console, wireing, seals, caulking.... OMG lol. The price you pay for a "Good Idea".

Re: How replacing the carpet turned into a new paint job

That's what i'm gonna do. I'm kinda scared to do it, but it'll be nice to send JUST A ROLLER to the body shop. I'm gonna take EVERYTHING out. Wiring, Everything under the hood, Interior EVERYTHING. The only things i'm not going to remove is the K-Member with the suspention attached and the Rear end. Only because I need them to get it to the shop. When i get it back, BAM! New UMI K-Member! BAM! Ford 9" Rear end! BAM! New 383 Engine and Transmission! BAM! New Wiring Harness! BAM! New interior!

Oh, and BAM! Empty Wallet!

Re: How replacing the carpet turned into a new paint job

Here are some more pictures of my progress.

Cleaning out the seam sealer

More of just removing everything

The lip here is actually rusted through so i cut it off and replaced it with fiber glass

Still have to trim and finish sand after applying glazing putty

After looking at a few post i decided i was going to shave the bumper ground effects and door handles. I am doing it the same way i saw in a post by drilling holes and using short strand bondo filler i will also epoxy the backside of each hole to try to form a cap so it cant pull out

Same exact thing happened to me. Went to switch out the engine and ended up gutting the car. Unfortunately its now sat for 10 years or so (health issues) but finally getting around to working on it.

From the Shaw I see! Your car will be easy to spray from the pics. I did mine last year and it came out nice. still got to finish some details, but it turned out nice.

The car looks relatively clean. Why would you fix rusted out areas with fiberglass? Do it right and repair it with metal. You are going through all that trouble to paint the car. You will not be happy when the repair cracks and you have to do it the right way.

Nice work! Not sure about the white w/ black GFX colour scheme though. I've seen it done and didn't like the look, but it's your car!

I've got some pics of my 88 in my album if you want to see one in white and black. It looks like that in pics anyway. Both colors are pearl, three stage.

What kind of welding method are you using..? Mig ? Tig ? As far as white with Black gfx.. Have a friend that did this, lasted a week. He found out that at night, the scheme made the car look like a base-Camaro. Good luck with the build! Stone

^^ yeah im with him on that too, i know someone who painted their gfx black and it looks pretty bad, keep the gfx body color, they resemble a higher trimed car, why would you want to hide them with black paint, it also makes people think that its a cheaply added on body kit with someone who was too lazy to paint them body color, please do not paint them black you will regret it

i agree completely. It looks tolerable with the 85-90 GFX, but only because the 85-90 gfx are a lot more subtle than the 91-92 gfx. And to get the 85-87 Z28's to look right with different ground fx, they match it to the wheel color and get a really elaborate stripe package to try to blend it into the body.

The 91-92 parts are just really large and aggressive looking, and if you paint them black it just has that import with a body kit that doesnt match look.

If you like the look go for it, but I think it just has a strange look since the 85+ ground fx are so integral to the lines of the car. They dont need to be hidden or emphasized. Keeping it body color makes the car look much more clean.

Re: How replacing the carpet turned into a new paint job

I want to ask why its not right to fix the rear quarters with fiberglass. There is always more than one way of doing something and also a right and wrong way of each method. I have used fiberglass with metal before, fiberglass and resin only adhere to porous materials, steel is porous, its all about the prep. I understand that rust can be a big issue if its not all taken care of it can push the fiberglass out and cause cracking but then its all back to the prep.

This is where the primer from a spray can bleed through on the clear for some odd reason. Its the off white strip on the top of the door.

As of now i have the doors and fenders sprayed hopefully in the next few days i will have time to finish painting.

Looking good! I think thirdgen cars look best one color, I have the two tone and can't wait to get a paint job. Maybe some strips here and there. But it cool when everyone has their own style.

Ya i used spray bomb primer lesson learned. and yes steel is porous that is why paint and filler putty and any thing else that is designed to seep into the surface and grab onto the surface sticks as well as it does.

Re: How replacing the carpet turned into a new paint job

here are some more pictures. I am going to keep it two colors. i wont be able to finish the GFX till this weekend and i wont be able to finish the spoiler and mirrors for a bit as i dumped sealer into my basecoat thinking it was leftover base coat. and I am back to being a broke college kid after buying the paint and supplies to go with. I wont be able to sand and buff for about a week. but in the mean time i will be assembling the whole car.

Do they just make a patch panel for the driver side floor pan on the very front? That's the only bad spot in my car
