Firewall seals / gaskets

Hey guys,
I recently stripped my engine bay during my LS1 swap so that I can get it painted the same color as my car. Trouble is that the seals or gaskets (whatever you want to call them) on my wiper motor and steering column are shot. I'm talking about the rubber type gaskets that seal these items to the firewall. I scoured the internet looking for new ones, but had no luck. I also did a search on here for this information, but had no luck with that either. Have any of you run into this problem? if so, what did you do?

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

you can still get the wiper motor seal form your GM dealer. Not sure about the steering column but would imagine that is available too.

Huh. Okay. Well, thanks for the input Mille, I'll check it out. Seems odd that I couldn't find either on the internet. Maybe they have some odd name or something

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

Awesome. Thanks! So now that I have the wiper motor seal, I just need to see if I can find the steering column seal. I'm calling my local GM dealer about it now.

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

No luck with the dealer on the steering column gasket. It's been discontinued. I've searched it about every possible way I can think of on the internet. It looks like I might have to make my own gasket.

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

i went to our pick n pull and scavenged a wide variety of firewall seals and gaskets from 20 different cars, grabbed all sorts of sizes/shapes, cut them to what i needed. Its also nice having a miscellaneous seal/gasket drawer in my tool box.

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

That's a good idea. I was thinking maybe a 4th gen seal would work. I'm looking at my old seal now. It's a little messed-up, but I might be able to reuse it or at least use it as a template. I was thinking maybe I should contact someone like Soffseal to see if they would start making them.

What do you guys think about something like this...
http://www.metrommp.com/metrocart/ty...ModelNumber=SR
and just use my old seal as a template to cut a new seal out of this sheet? For less than $2 I wouldn't be out much if it didn't work.

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

Stupid link! I can't seem to get it to work. Anyways... This is what it is: Closed Cell Sponge Rubber Sheet with skin on 1-side only. Dark Gray. 5" wide X 7" long X 1/8" thick from Metro Moulded Parts (PN: SR 18-0507). I went ahead and ordered it. It was $1.55 for the part & $7 for shipping! That bugs me when the shipping is more than the part. I'll let you guys know how it turns out once it comes in and I get it cut out.

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

I don't know how big the difference in the firewall is between a late 2nd gen and a 3rd gen, but if you search for "steering column to firewall seal" you'll get a few hits.

There looks to be a pretty big difference between the two. I think I've looked at pretty much every firewall seal available over the past few days.

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

My sheet of sponge rubber came in the mail today & I just ordered my wiper motor gasket. I will post pics of the steering column firewall gasket once I get it cut-out.

Here's the sponge rubber that I used

The final outline. I had to use a ball point pen to trace it

Re: Firewall seals / gaskets

I cut around the outside with scissors and used the hole punch for the holes

new gasket / old gasket. I cut out the center with a utility knife, but I think a surgeon's scalpal would have been much better. I just didn't have one. If I do another one I might try an Exacto knife.

Pretty easy stuff. What do you guys think?
