factory undercoating

Anybody know what the fatory applied in the wheelwells and on the front frame rails? It looks like black undercoating but is really tough, almost like paint. I have dealer applied undercoating on mine also, and it looks more like a petroleum based undercoating. I had my car painted and I need to replicate the look in the wheelwells and on the spare tire hump that is visible from outside the car.

I already tried to but didn't find much.

Mantaguy - I read through that, and really didn't find an answer to my question. I just need to know if there is something close to what the factory sprayed on the car in certain spots. Every thirdgen had it. It was applied sparingly in the wheelwells, and parts of the undercarriage.

Re: factory undercoating

the vehicles we see at work now have a rubberized undercoating, the gm dealer sells a rubberized undercoating
in aerosol (ac delco),im not sure how much gm has changed there undercoating since then, hopefully this helps.

Re: factory undercoating

The undercoating on my car is hard. It does not feel like rubberized undercoating. I may have to use it if I find no other alternative. But there has to be something close.

Re: factory undercoating

yeah it is ziebart, when the vehicles go in for re-spray thats were they go but for minor touchups the acdelco undercoating is used, now i dont know when they started using the ziebart undercoating, but after any length of time i would imagine it will harden.

Re: factory undercoating

There is also a product named Tectyl but I would have to buy a 55 gallon drum of it. That's a bit more then I need.

Re: factory undercoating

I've been talking to a couple fellows on another site about this and no one seems to know what kind or brand GM used back then. Some insist it's Ziebart and some insist it's not.So back to square one!!!

Re: factory undercoating

I think Ziebart was dealer applied, though i could be wrong. I am going to order that stuff from Eastwood and see how it works. Maybe I will spray the inside of the doors before I reassemble them also.

Re: factory undercoating

that sounds like a plan, im going to use the rubberized coating on my firebird, but im not restoring it to be original, im looking more to the performance side at this point.
