banging/clattering from rear passenger side

Hey guys,

my car has been doing this for ages but i always thought it was the spare tyre moving around, however ive got nearly all of the interior out at the minute and its still doing it !

it does it when going over bumps or while i was testing it out tonight, if you steer side to side vigorously, i was just doing it to test it out and i swear its coming from the rear wheel arch area on the inside, somethings banging against something else but i dont know what, but there isnt anything there to be rattling around saying as there no spare wheel, no interior plastics, no nothing ?

im pretty sure its nothing from under the car either, its got a nice new, tight exhaust, wheel nuts are all tight

check ALL of your suspension. not just the struts. physically grab it and make sure there is not adnormal play anywhere.

ok thanks mate, i'll get under the car tomorrow night and start grabbing stuff, hopefully nothing will fall off !

rear shocks were new about 3 years ago, ive replaced all the bushes front and back, might be a broken spring ? but wouldnt the car sit funny if one was snapped ?

My truck made a clanking noise like that, turned out to be a sway bar end link getting ready to let go.

Re: banging/clattering from rear passenger side

is that the rubber pad thing that sits ontop of the springs when installing them ? urgh, so many things to check, hopefully i will get around to it one night this week.

when i steered the car side to side sharply thats when i was constantly bang bang banging so im thinking its something on the suspension that can also move from side to side if that makes sense, not something thats going up and down

Re: banging/clattering from rear passenger side

Easiest thing to do would be to set the car up on jackstands where the stands are under the rear frame rails so that the axle hangs free, remove the rear wheels, and manually shift the rear axle side to side. That way, you will be able to tell if the rear axle is actually moving laterally and where the problem is. However, if the rear axle is indeed moving laterally, it's probably a problem with either the track bar, track bar brace, or one of the brackets for the track bar. If the axle isn't moving, put the wheels back on and pull each of those laterally to check for a problem there.

Re: banging/clattering from rear passenger side

On my 91 I was checking for a noise in passenger rear and found the bottom of my spare tire mount isn't attached to anything. I would suspect this to be a rather unusual thing to find though.

ihad the exact sameproblem with my 91 rs it was the rear contol arm. im my case the bolt was loose but it may be worn out bushings as well . good luck it drove me crazy and once i had it figured out it was such a pleasue to drive my car after that

Actually it's pretty common and a good suggestion.
The lower end of the spare bracket tends to rust away with the lower quarter.

Re: banging/clattering from rear passenger side

wow old thread being kicked up here

The problem turned out to be the bushes on my panhard bar were worn out, so it was slapping side to side making the banging noise.

One tubular Hotchkis panhard bar later and im all good
