Qouted from ***FAQ*** on ThirdGen.org:
"The RS option was first availible in 1987 and was present until 1992. From 1990 to 1992, the RS option was the lowest availible option as the base model Camaro was not produced."
I also assume that you're talking about the thirdgen RS's.

no, the rs was the lowest model from '89 to '92. it came out in '87 as a test market vehicle I believe. California and Florida. I've never seen a '88 RS, but apparently it exists. In my '88 maro brochure there is the sport coupe and the IROC. That's it. But I believe someone on the board has a '88 sport coupe and a '88 RS. It must have still been a special edition/test market vehicle for the "RS" name. RS had more obvious ties to the past, so I guess that's why it stayed. In '89 the RS replaced the sport coupe. And it replaced it only in name. A '89 rs was just like an '88 sport coupe, BUT the ground effects were body colored instead of gold or silver. And BTW, I have a '88 sport coupe.

yes in 1987 the rally sport came out, but it was only limited to florida or california, as for 1988 the cars that are not z28`s or iroc`s have "camaro" badging and usually the shorter style wing, similiar to the 91-92 z28 wing.so they dont have rs badging but in a sense that is what they are.

fastcamaro87, there were no '88 z/28's. the only two models that were availiable were the sport coupe and the iroc-Z, and of course their convertible versions.

Untrue. The first year of the RS was '88 and they were all 2.8L. There was only a handful made (around 300). I own one and it has RS badging and is not california emmisions. The 305 RS joined in 1989. It's basically a Z28 without the engine. It came with the leather wrapped steering wheel and RS on the dash. The earlier 'camaro' badged cars w/ ground effects usually had the 305/carb and may or may not have the deluxe interior. Most sources list the RS coming out in '89 but my car was made in June so it's registered as an '88. The only TPI motors in an RS came in the B4C package (police).

I've been reading this thread just waiting for documented information to surface. It hasn't, only more misinformation. Let me clarify this issue once and for all.
When statements as this are made, you MUST follow up with the source of the information. Otherwise, it is only conjecture -- not confirmed. This statement is incorrect.
According to the Camaro Technical Database:
(quote)
1987.... Late in the model year, RS Camaro was introduced for California with V-6 power only. RS had Z28 style valances that were painted body color (like IROC) and had no lower body stripes. The RS got the 15-inch 5-spoke aluminum Z28 wheel which were painted to match body color. 1987 RS Camaro came only in red, white, or black.
(unquote)
Info from "Camaro, The Third Generation":
(quote)
January (1987) also saw the revived Camaro RS make its debut at the Los Angeles auto show. The RS began as a California-only package (Special Equipment Order 101), again based on the Sport Coupe, with the V-6 engine standard. The limited-production 1987 RS borrowed styling features from the Z28 in such, details as its color-coordinated wheels, bolder rocker extensions, body-color chin spoiler, and lowered suspension. Required options were air conditioning, tinted glass, rear compartment cover, rear spoiler, the UM6 AM/FM cassette stereo, and U21 gauge cluster. Options were very limited, and the RS came in only three exterior colors: red, white and black; with black, gray and red custom interiors, respectively.
(unquote)
Where did this information come from? Again, not true. Common to both cars are the steering wheel, shifter **** and ground effects. Some of the differences include hood, spring rates, sway bar size and exterior graphics.
Were you told this? This is also incorrect. According to the "Camaro White Book":
(quote)
(1988) RS models were available in limited areas (California & Florida). For 1988, 7038 were sold.
(1989) Success with the specially optioned RS model offered regionally in 1987 AND 1988 led to the use of the RS designation as a model series in 1989.
(unquote)
It's irrelevant when a car is manufactured. A model year typically begins in September/October for the following year and ceases around July of that year. So yes, if a car is made in June, it probably is for that year. But it is not this statement that makes the car a 1988; the VIN states the model year. The one exception to this "typical" model year run is the 1990 Camaro. None were manufactured in 1990, but in 1989.
Moderators of this forum, I'd suggest moving this topic to my forum, the History/Restoration board.

well willie, I can verify all of my part that I've said, my '88 camaro dealer brochure is sitting right in front of me.... but what I still don't understand is the so-called "88 RS Camaros" real or fiction? It doesn't make sense to have a '88 sport coupe and a '88 RS.

The 1987 dealership brochure does not include the RS because it was not a "regular production" car. It was available in California only. What I don't know is how many were produced.
I also have the 1988 Camaro dealer brochure. For this year, the test market was expanded to include California and Florida. Can you imagine the uproar if it was in the brochure, yet not available in 48 states? Hence the reason why it is not in the brochure.

The only Sport Coupe with ground effects, shorty rear wing and exterior "CAMARO" badging is the 1988 Sport Coupe. The 1987 LT was a one-year only option on the 1987 Sport Coupe. It replaced the Berlinetta minus the "Star Wars" digital instrument panel. It included all the "luxury" options as the previous Berlinetta, such as upgraded interior, 14-inch wheels, soft-ride suspension and a unique striping combination. It did NOT include ground effects.

Here is a source to choke on. Car craft (couple months back) lists the history of the third gen year by year and for '89 they say the RS was introduced for the first time. I know this is untrue but there's a source. I said 'basically'. Of course spring rates are different because it's a dif motor. Do you have proof of an 87 rs?

oh great. so by painting my headlight buckets black I made my sport coupe into a '88 RS from the front, and a '88 SC from the rear. Then again the '83 z/28 hood prolly raises enuf eyebrows. hey the girls believe it, so what's the problem?

To the best of my knowledge, no. The shorty spoiler was a 1988 Sport Coupe exclusive, and not all Sport Coupes got it either.
I like your car. There's one the same color in my work parking lot, but it's an original convertible. The owner tried to sell it a couple of years ago, but changed his mind.
Stay tuned guys..... I will be posting again with what I think is undeniable proof of a 1987 RS.....
Willie
i like to too....... the only problem is, that it depresses me. seriously. I think something is wrong with me, I love it so much that the rust that it has accumulated since I first bought it in nov of '99 (none to enough) actually saddens me. Like when I took it too the car wash the other day. I thought my girlfriend was gonna burst out laughing when she saw the look on my face when I saw a quarter sized chunk of paint come off my car and expose rust. confusion (wtf?) to anger (damn you!) to verbally cussing at my car. It doesn't help that she once saw me kiss my car on the hood. what can I say? I love it but I need to do something about the rust.

Slow, you need to move out of the rust belt!! Try Arizona!!! There is no such thing as rust here and the weather is awesome! I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Okay guys, here it is. In my archives, I found a road test of the 1987 RS in the May 1987 issue of Motor Trend. If this doesn't resolve this issue once and for all, I don't know what will.

OK that it hard proof on the 87 RS
Does anyone have proof of a 87 or 88 RS with an engine other than a 2.8?
My '88 was purchased in Rochester, NY. It came with no smog pump or any type of air injection (pulse-air) stock. I beleive the dealer told the guy who purchased it there was about 300 or so made for '88. This is third hand news so unreliable, but 1st hand I never saw a RS with a 305 in 87 or 88.

Thank God for Willie!! I have been reading these posts and wanted to reply to most of 'em and correct all the wrongs but I decided to keep reading in hopes that someone was gonna catch 'em all. Willie is dead on with all the information. My 87 paperwork from Chevrolet also states the RS. I will check tonite for quantities.
I had an 88 SC with the 305 in red with custom grey interior. The car had every option on it available except the correct rear wing. It had the ugly shorty. I quickly removed it and installed the Z28 spoiler, IROC hood and blacked out the headlight area. It looked like an 87 Z28 minus the steering wheel, body stripes and badging. I even replaced the rim center caps with black ones from a 92 RS that just said Camaro.

I meant a true 'RS' badged 87 or 88 with a 305. I have never seen one. Where can you get production #? from GM or reference books of some sort.
For some reason, my Camaro White Book seems to have disappeared.....
But it does state that 87 and 88 RS's were produced. If I could find it, it would probably have the production #'s.
BTW, I used to have an 88 RS for a parts car. I know it doesn't tell if it is a RS or not, but the VIN was 1G1FP21S2JL183555.
It doesn't help much, but I don't have any pics of it - I just memorized the VIN (do this with every car), but since it was about a year ago, I am not too sure about the check digit...

From all of my sources the RS came out in 87. 87 had all kinds of models. The LT was introduced to replace the SC and it did but changed name to RS that same year and a few things were changed.
------------------
, Jon (91 RS too many mods to list)
Dale Earnhart, you have done so much, you will be missed.

But the LT and the Sport Coupe were both around in '87. If I recall correctly the LT was to replace the Berlinetta, but sales and interest obviously weren't there, so the iroc and the sport coupe were the only models in '88 (other than the few RS's). Chevy's way of simplifiing things I guess.

Slow nailed it. Here's the progression of available models, starting in 1986.
1986
Sport Coupe
Berlinetta (discontinued at mid-year with only 4,479 units built)
Z28
Notice I don't list the IROC-Z? That's because it was not a model, but an option on the Z28.
1987
Sport Coupe
RS (California only - not nationally advertised)
Z28
Again, no LT or IROC-Z. The LT was an option on the Sport coupe. The IROC-Z was.... same as 1986.
In a manner of speaking, there were four types of Camaros in 1987. GM tried in vain to make ordering these cars simpler by grouping specific options in "packages". This turned out to be a fiasco -- production numbers of the options are very inaccurate because of this, but this is another story.
1988
To simplify all this, Chevy decided to reduce the number of styles.
Sport Coupe
RS (California & Florida only - not nationally advertised)
IROC-Z
Basically only two styles, down from four for 1987.
