Air Dam Ground Clearance

I was just positioning my new air dam under the car, and this thing has about 2 inches from the bottom of it to the ground. Is this normal? I can see why the previous owner had it removed, and why it gets destroyed so easy.

Yea thats normal.. mine is about 3 inches off the ground.. only due to the fact that the other inch has been "sanded off" by the damn road.. I wish there was an easier way

kind of a crackhead design if u ask me

Ok Thanks.. Ya it is a rather stupid design.. I wonder how long mine will last. Since I have a "soft" suspension..

The reason 3rd gen air dams are set low is so they can scoop-up more road trash. Like those plastic bags on the freeway will always make a beeline for your bottom-feeder air sucker.

hehe i mounted my liscense plate to my air dam cause here in ohio you have to have a front plate and i didn't want to mount it on my nose. so every time my air dam scrapes the liscense plate does too and it makes a terrible scratching sound. lol

A GM technician told me years ago that there is an air dam that is held in place with springs, so when it hits the ground, it'll just spring up.

He didn't say which model/year had that type, but would suspect the 4th generations...

I thought about modificating mine with springs. It wouldn't be that hard, but so far has not been a problem with me.

P.S. Think about what it'd do when driving in a lot of snow!

I was actually thinking of putting a spring loaded hinge on mine. Here there are to many things to get in the way. some of the speed bumps here are so big I sometimes wonder if I'd bottom out.. since I only drive my RS about 6 months out of the year.. I don't have to worry about the snow.. Thanks for your input guys..

Actually, It is easiest to trim it yourself. I used a commercial dremel type tool to cut nearly an inch off so it wont bottom out or break off due to a 1 1/2 in. drop. I have not had any overheating problems, even while cruizing at 110mph for 2 hours.

Yeah, the scaping sucks. But I put mine back on today and the car runs 35-40 degrees cooler now. I can live with a scraoing noise every once in a while.

My idea to resolve the scraping issue is to mount rubber wheels (like are under the tail of RV's and trailers) under the spoiler so it can't scrape. The wheels would raise the front, preventing it from scraping.
