Electro-Chromatic Mirror?
Electro-Chromatic Mirror?
I'm not sure if I've spelled that correctly, but I know that its in 2001 Monte Carlo SS's. You press a power button and it runs an electric current through the mirror and it tints everything sort of green for night driving. I thought it'd be a real good aftermarket thing to get, but I havent been able to find one. Does anyone know where they might be sold? Thanks.
Next time you see a 2001 Monte parked with the windows rolled down, reach inside and rip it off.
Just kidding. If you get lucky, you might be able to get one out of a junkyard. They've been on higher trim level Chrysler cars for about 6 years (I think). Look for newish Grand Cherokees and Grand Caravans and scope the mirror. Soccer moms are always wrecking those things. The mirrors in these are automatic, not button activated like you describe. They have a photocell in front and behind the mirror to compare light levels inside and outside the car and adjust the tint of the mirror accordingly. I'm sure one could be easily adapted to your car. (I may even start keeping an eye out for one!)

my mom has one too in her 97 buick lesaber. you turn it on with a switch under the rear-view mirror. when light hits the mirror, it tints the driver side rear view mirror and the interior rear view as well.
I contacted a chrysler parts center about the mirrors just to get some more specific information. The man didnt seem to know what he was talking about and said that there might be something other than the mirror that I'd need to rig it up. I would think that as long as the photocells are on the mirror itself that it would be a closed system. A new one would cost $148.00. Does anyone know for sure if the mirror would be all that you need? If so I'll start checking with the local salvage yards, ect. Thanks.
We have one in our 98 Chrysler Sebring LXi. It's pretty cool. Everything is contained inside the mirror and italso has two lights and a compass. I've been searching for one for my car but no luck.

Sorry I can't recall the RPO code, but GM did make a auto-dimming mirror for our cars--obviously it wasn't as fancy as the one described, but it might be a consideration.

JamesC you are correct...I completely forgot about that. The chromatic mirror was offered in 1986. Possibly other years as well but I know in 86 for sure. Try calling Classic Industries or Year One, they might be able to help.

My dad has one like the jcwhitney one in his '98 yukon. It has a compass, temp and the auto dimmer. When we test drove the yukon, I noticed that this mirror was on alot of the other trucks they had at the dealerships and it was a factory option I think, so GM might sell it. Probably cheaper through JC whitney though.
My brothers Grand Prix GTP had one of those auto dimmers in it to. I know classic industries does cary the one that was available from the factory on thirdgens. You knw as many cars as its available on you might consider just junk yard hopping until you find a wrecked car with one in it. I gurante it will be the cheapest way.

i got one of those in my rents 98 blazer...its an LT tho..i think its standard in all of them cause weve had 3.. from 95 and up weve had those rear view dimmer things...it looks like a regular mirror but it has "OFF" and "AUTO" on the bottom, and auto tints it whenever the light gets slightly higher..its a real nice option..look at junkyards for blazers 95+ and just snag one..its not fancy like the ones with all the compasses and **** and it works..shouldnt be to hard to find either. Plus its from a CHEVY! YAY!
How do you install these mirrors? do they just plug into where the original mirror was? i have access to one out of a wrecked camaro, but does it need to plug into the computer or somewhere in order to work right?
From what I've heard, its a closed system. You plug it into power and it'll auto dim on its own. You may want to check one of the web pages that was posted in this thread, it has a link to instructions. I think it may have said you can splice it into the power for the dome light. Good luck.
I've got one of these that came stock in my 87. I didn't know about it when I bought the car (about 4 years ago). I just turned it on, and I was driving at night, all of a sudden, the mirror just dimmed. You can also adjust it's sensitivity through a **** that's on it.
