the upper console is easily removed. take off the top trim peices and take ut the center console storage to get to the bolts that hold the upper cover down. when you remove the shifter plate you should be able to see the forwad retaining bolts. take them out and it should come off after you take the screw out of the e brake handle.

Me Too.......

.......I am interested in this topic as well. If the weather ever improves, gets over 50 and quits raining for weeks on end, I have a new carpet to install. Of course the old one has to come out as well.

Helpful hints, anyone?

a 7mm bolt on each side next to the stereo, take the torx screws out of the console. Remove Shift ****. Take out the phillips screw from the E-Brake handle. Should reveal i believe 2 10mm that have to be taken out to take out the upper console, also 2 in the bottom of console and 2 under console lid latch. upper console comes off. Now theres 4 i believe 10mm bolts holding the bottom console in. I may have forgotten something, as im doing it from memory

There are 4 bolts that hold in an '87 Firebird console. Two in the rear of the glove box compartment, and 2 under the shift plate right ahead of the glove box part. You have to remove the 2 screws in the glove box part to remove the shift plate first.

I believe some cars might have had a 5th bolt up front under the ash tray area, but you can see that once the shift plate is off.

Does this help?

my problem was that the owner before me decided to line the bottom of the storage space in my console with carpet.
After i found the two screws underneath removal was a piece of cake.

I finally did it!

Well today was the day.......no rain, temps are over 50 and I skipped work (as is my right.....thanks, local 6).

Everything you guys said was right on and was relatively painless. The only thing I would add to the narrative is unbolting the emergency brake assembly so that the console (upper and lower) slides out easily without bending or flexing.

Now to clean everything up and start working on the install.

Thanks again!

Steve

PS: I would like to add that there are a lot of good folks on this board, with one or two notable exceptions. It certainly is educational AND enjoyable!
