I have a 92 RS with the rear view mirror containing map lights. Just to the left of the right map light under the mirror is a little diagonal slot, which appears to be another light that shines down around the ash tray and shifter. I believe I have seen it come on once or twice while driving, but I have not been able to find anything that triggers it. Does anybody know what this light is for, and what triggers it?

I have the same light but mine stays on all of the time day and night, every time the car is on! I would like to know what it is also.

But do you know what is supposed to trigger it?

 

Parking lights or headlights?

Maybe you have a bad connection and the bulb is bad or wiring..

 

The parking lights trigger mine. If my lights are off, it is too. As soon as I pull the light switch out into the 1st position (parking lamps) it comes on.

Sounds like the bulb is loose or something. Take it apart and clean the bulb contacts up.
