I would guess the paint would wear off easily (but I don't really know). How about re-covering it with leather, vinyle, tweed, ect. ?

I used the vinyl dye from Classic Industries to paint my arm rests from tan to carmine red. It worked great.

if you prep it right it shouldn't be a problem. clean it well, run a tack cloth over it, then use an adhesion promoter on the surface and paint...unless you use dye, not sure if it works different or not. regardless, prep is the key

Prep is the key. It absolutely has to be clean, clean, clean. I used VHT penetrating color dye from Summit. No problems. Did I mention the part has to be clean? A good scubbing with formula 409, a good rinse, a second good scrubbing with 409 and a good rinse all the while holding the piece with latex gloves or put a dowel through one of the screw holes to hold it. The oil from your finger print, will prevent dye from sticking. Then the part has to be Absolutely dry! use a hair dryer or heat gun, but don't burn the vinyl.

I've used paint and dye before and I think the dye works better. Paint has a tendency to peel, and if it's scratched the old color shows through.

I bought some dye from autozone, changed from white to black, I just cleaned the armrest off with windex and used light coats, actually looks better than the other side! May have to do that sometime.
