irocs getting painted
Took the rear bumper cover off to get it stripped, repaired and primed. Gunna start tearing all the ground effects, bumpers, decals, weather stripping, door handles, locks and glass out to repaint it correctly. Going back with the factory orange with a different base to make it alittle different. Will see how it turns out. My painter said it'll really make it pop. Will post pics as it goes.

Re: irocs getting painted
What base?
What paint are you using?
Base color makes little difference with most of todays paints, they are not transparent enough.
In the old days of laquers painters would use different bases, to change the overall color.
Yellow base was used to make red pop a lot.

Its medium orange metallic. Were using matrix paint. He said hes gunna thin the base down and spray it like a candy. He said hes done it before so i trust him. I hope it comes out how he thinks it will.

Its a 88 only color. They only made alittle over 3000 in that color. I've never seen one in person other than mine. But who ever repainted it was way off. Its more of a maroon right now. But after I pulled the weather stripping off I saw the original paint witch is bad a**.

It's an awsome color for sure. I've thought about repainting mine that color.
I don't think I've ever seen one in that color in person before.

Re: irocs getting painted
Its not Orange like mine, more of a sunset orange, pretty uncommon color though.

Gotcha. I've seen a few Camaros painted that color. I've always thought it was like a rust color.

Well they did have 2 oranges. One was more of a copper color. Mines more of a burnt orange. But has a gold hue to it.

Re: irocs getting painted
Yes the new hood is a gm hood off another iroc. The hood that was on my car was a rust free hood but had a lot of small light dent from the underside up and one dent from the topside down. Would have takin hm like 2 days to fix it. Its is repairable though if anyone is lookin for a hood. Its the original hood off my car. Still has the vin sticker on it.

Re: irocs getting painted
I'm not doin the accual body and paint. A friend of mine is. But to answer ur question yes u can. That's how I would have done it. But he's more comfortable doin it this way I guess. Only thing I if the first color does cure enough u have a chance of pulling it off when u take the tape off. Then u get to start all over.

The car finally got painted today. Still has to paint the bumpers, mirrors, hatch and stripes. Here are some pics so far. I know it looks red but it is in fact orange. My phone makes it look this way.

Looks beautiful, very nice.
You don't see many done in a real paint booth with a professional painter.
Mind if you tell us what it cost you in materials and labor/painter.

Re: irocs getting painted
i had it painted at work. The painter hooked me up big time. For a gallon of base, clear and sealer i paid about 600 bucks. i also had to get 2 quarts of more base (this stuff is very transparent). for labor i paid 850. But i took the car apart and am putting it back together. There wasnt a whole lot of bodywork on the car thats y he did it so cheap. With weatherstripping, getting the rear bumper stripped and primed and some odds and ends i think i have about 2400 invested. If i would have had any other shop do it i would have been hi 3 to 4000.

Re: irocs getting painted
Thats a killer price for what you have achieved. Like you said knowing a pro. painter with access to a booth makes all the difference in the world when it comes to getting/affording high end paint jobs. Thats the only way I managed to get mine done with all the bells and whistles.

I've done some great paint jobs in my garage. But its a lot nicer when done in a booth. Less dust to deal with usually.

Re: irocs getting painted
sence i went with the 91-2 blisters it dosnt look right without them to me. Also i had my painter clear my rear bumper saturday and its a good thing i did. The place we got the paint from mixed the base about 5 shade to dark. if i wouldnt have caught it the hood, deck lid and mirrors would have been way off. witch really would have sucked sence the stripes are gunna be painted on not vinyl.

glad to see someone painting a car the "right way by not masking everything up and painting it. Only way to make a car look right is to diss-assemble and paint!

Re: irocs getting painted
I hate tape lines and overspray. The only thing I wish I had the extra money for was a windshield. Somethin came up and had to use some of my paint money so it did get masked off. Other than that it was done right. Here are a few more pics with the bumpers repainted and back on. Also what do u guys think of the new emblems.
