sounds like the vacuum selector has a leak, you cna pull it apart and fix it, or just do what I did, get another heater/ a/c control unit and just swap it in. Nothin complicated, just put the vacuum lines back on right

MattW,

This is a problem common to our cars. First, You could have a leak somewhere in a vac line (a mechanic can check that in five minutes). Second, the harness at the 'switch panel' could be leaking (try removing the harness from the vacumm valve tubes and swabbing the tubes with petroleum jelly). Three, as 86ZRichie says, the vacuum valve may be defective (the valve is held in by two screws, an easy fix; however, you'll have to remove the AC/Heater head. Removal is straghtforward: vac harness, electrical connections, and the temperature cable (On the top left of the AC/Heater control, note a slot. The cable is secured to the AC/heater control by a rectangular plastic piece with a hole in its center. When the plastic piece is inserted in the slot, a circular tab pops into the hole and locks the cable in place. Use a small screw driver to separate the tab from the hole).

Remove the black plastic bezel that surrounds the radio and heater controls (four torx screws). Once the bezel is removed, you'll see that the AC/heater control head is held in place by three screws.

All those that I've messed with have pulled out far enough to access everything (see my post above) required to yank the unit.

It's kinda hard to pull out cuz of the temp cable... it doesn't like to give much. It's up to you, but pulling out the stereo helps alot...
