RUST

Just got a new door (well used but new to me) and it has rust in the bottom. I checked the tech articles and didn't find an article on how to fix it. What do I need to do (the rust went completly through the door), what sand paper, what compound and other stuff.

First in case you didn't see the reply to your earlier post, thanks for looking out in regards to that TA that was being parted out in Brooklyn. Now as for rust. You have to completely remove that rust. Use 80 an grit disc to grind away that rust. If you have a hole, you are going to have to patch it with a welded patch or fiberglass patch. Grind the paint away 1" past the rusted area. This gives the welder or fiberglass a clean place to bond. If you don't have a hole, after you grind away that rust, use POR-15 (the best stuff out there) www.por15.com to protect the area from any rust returns. Then rebuild the surface with bondo. Sand with 220 grit, prime, sand with 400 grit to make glass smooth and you are good to go.

You bought a door with so much rust that it's got holes? Those are the kind that you should be removing from your car! To do it right, you need to replace the door skin, which will cost more than you probably paid for the door. The cheaper way is to sand blast the rust 100% away, and if the holes aren't too big, you can beat them in a little bit, and use chopped reinforced fiberglass filler, sand, then coat with regular body filler, then sand to the proper shape. Problem is, if there's holes rotten in it, chances are the entire bottom edge is pretty well wiped out. Because there is a seam inside, there's no way to effectively remove 100% of the rust, so no matter what you do, it's going to come back.

The door only has a little rust, not that bad. If you would have seen the condition of the old door, you would see the vast improvement. I was using the skills I obserevd from watching the Dukes Of Hazzard and climbing out the t-tops. Now my door opens and closes with no problem. Body shops told me $400 to fix the door, I got this one for a $100

Can you clear this up for me?

In the first post you said the rust went right through the door. Does this mean it has a hole rotten right through the door? In the second post you said it's not that bad. I'm lost here. If there is a hole rotten in the door, then you got screwed HARD for $100.

Didn't get screwed at all. Its a little bit of rust that alot of people get. A little hole did go through but not bad. Body shops were telling me that it would cost over $400 to fix my existing door (just to fix the sagging, not the lock or the rust), I paid $100 for this one with a little bit of rust.

I just have a hard time believing that a door that has a hole rotten in it only has a "little" rust or was worth anywhere near $100. The last time I bought a door I paid $25 for it with the window and door panel still in it, and there were no holes, although the lower section that wraps around to the inside was shot.

But, I suppose it's worthless to speculate, because without seeing it, there's really not much to argue over.

You got a hell of a deal. Anyplace I called around here either had no doors or wanted over $300 for them. So, I weighed my chioces and found I got a good deal. Like I stated before, body shops wanted $400 to fix my door and the locks were messed up, it was dented, and had rust on it. I still think I got a good deal, if you don't, well come to my neighborhood and try to find cheaper parts.
